pretentious twaddle
Revisado: 11-13-24
Too preachy and self aware to be post modern - I had higher hopes for something by an Asian artist, but it was too focused on European history. Good that it was in Audible plus - I would have hated to waste a credit on it.

Historia
As a precocious kid who took Broadway by storm at the age of 18, Laura Benanti spent her formative years playing grown-ups onstage, but it took her a while to figure out how to be one in real life. With her razor-sharp wit and unapologetic candor, Benanti shares her hard-won insights on topics like marriage, motherhood, perimenopause, female friendship, and making peace with the younger versions of ourselves.

"Melania" speaks - and sings
Revisado: 10-18-24
I know Laura Benanti from Stephen Colbert - I knew she was talented and funny from those sketches, but I had no idea how genuinely funny she is. This piece from the Audible plus catalog is a real treat. Highly enjoyable! My one negative comment is the audio needs better editing - sometimes her high notes are garbled to them point where you miss out on them lyrics...and sometimes she and her off stage support talk over each other. I don't want to miss a word this lady has to say!

Historia
Always Greener is an exquisite portrait of Kate Grenville's complex, conflicted grandmother, who she feared as a child and only in adulthood came to understand. Born in rural Australia, Dolly Russell becomes a successful businessperson, mother and troubled wife. Then came the depression, bankruptcy and World War I. Yet, in a way, those disasters freed her. They allowed her to use her intelligence and ambition to make a space for herself in a man’s world.

an easy enough listen - a sad story, but triumphant somehow. A woman born at the wrong time manages to carve out a place not just for herself, but ensures her daughter will have a future and a legacy.

it's fine
Revisado: 10-10-23
Ms Cartwright has talent, and is very lucky. There were barely any struggles in establishing herself and her career - good for her. It's not her fault - she's not a spoiled Nepo baby, so I won't badmouth her. And yeah, she's a Scientologist. She doesn't try to convert you, She just mentions Hubbard and some Scientology products/institutions once or twice- I don't agree , but she isn't rubbing it in your face. This is not a heavy philosophical tome- it's the lifestyle of the woman who voices Bart Simpson. You get pretty much what you expect. No big revelations but no disappointments either.

might as well be Murder She Wrote
Revisado: 09-20-23
I used to drive my mother crazy by watching the first ten minutes of the TV murder mystery show or movie she was watching, identify the killer and leave the room. I'd come back after an hour or ninety minutes, to see the denouement, where the killer would be revealed as the one I'd pointed out. I'm not trying to pretend I'm Sherlock Holmes - there is something about that way TV dramas are written - they aren't subtle in "foreshadowing", often using obviousl musical cues and camera angles.
Apparently, it's not just visual cues, as I had the same experience with this audio piece - I mumbled loudly after chapter two who the killer was. I actually dozed off at some point, only to wake up at chapter 15, to have the summary tell me I gotten it right (it was just like being a kid again, only my mother wasn't there to howl "how did you kniwy?!" in disappointment.)
The writing of this podcast was that obvious - they telegraphed every "surprise" in excruciating detail with all the subtlety of a tooth extraction without anesthesia. The style was repetitive and droning : I said. He said. yawn! It was a waste of time and I'm disappointed Dakota Fanning's career has come to doing murder mysteries that Audible gives out free.

Anti-Capitalist Propaganda - Woke to the Extreme

Where is the rest of the world
Revisado: 08-15-23
A thinly veiled dystopian version of the Covid 19 pandemic - who needs fiction when you have price gouging, war and posturing governments?
Alethea is like all of those "the future is terrible" misery-lit shows in that it focuses entirely on one location - some part of the USA and there are no other places even mentioned (did they have an epidemic, how did they deal with it etc) In Alethea, if you're not in New York state, you don't exist - good thing too, because they're all evil capitalist pigs over there who engineer diseases just to enslave humanity. I'll stay in my hemisphere then.

Why was this ever a "case" or a podcast? Why didn't the police just use the DNA evidence from the rape kits to confirm who this fantastist is? And what is wrong with MacSorely that she couldn't recognise an accent that was clearly not Irish. Has the world gone insane?

Lewis Black has some things to get off his chest! With his weekly podcast "Lewis Black’s Rantcast," the Grammy-winning comedian does just that. Channeling his anger in ways only a man who’s devoted his entire life to ranting can do. The tirades are sometimes big, other times small, yet they are always fun-spirited and truly hilarious. No topic is safe from Black’s trademark style of comedic yelling and animated finger-pointing. Skewering anything and anyone that gets under his skin. On the "Rantcast," Black isn’t the only person getting things off his chest, each week Lewis allows fans...

Revisado: 06-30-23
i don't know how anyone would be able to NOT sing the bonus song after listening to this play. It's not award winning drama, it's light entertainment. I listened after finishing "The Good Place" (drawn in by D'Arcy Carden's name in the credits) and was drawn in by the good-natured comedy. Ed Begley Jr is a gem. The cast are having fun and not taking it seriously - this is a delightful piece to listen to when you're stuck in a waiting room.

Scary how it foreshadowed the Trump Presidency
Revisado: 08-15-22
I have always been a fan of Dave Barry, and leapt at the opportunity to get a book that he performs in. Lunatics is a hilarious ride, and it's off-the-wall rhetoric turned out to be repeated practically verbatim by the 45th President (rants about low flow toilets)... it's scary how a ludicrous satire became reality.
