Historia
In a future wracked by environmental catastrophe and social instability, physicist John Renfrew devises a longshot plan to use tachyons - strange, time-traveling particles - to send a warning to the past. In 1962, Gordon Bernstein, a California researcher, gets Renfrew's message as a strange pattern of interference in an experiment he's conducting.

Generally quite good
Revisado: 01-16-19
This book is one of interesting contradictions. That is not the subject matter, but the result of what appears to be inconsistent editing and two different readers, one of whom is easy to listen to, and the not.
First, the editing. Some science fiction reads as though the author had a great idea for a story, and did research respecting the science, to support it. Others read as though the author started with a scientific text book and tried to shove its contents into a storyline. This book has a mix of both. The reader is moving along quickly with the story and then slams their face into a brick wall of theoretical science, in detail unnecessary for the story.
as for the narration, there are two narrators. One has and English accent, the other apparently a nasal infection.

Historia
Bill Bryson and his family live in a Victorian parsonage in a part of England where nothing of any great significance has happened since the Romans decamped. Yet one day, he began to consider how very little he knew about the ordinary things of life as he found it in that comfortable home. To remedy this, he formed the idea of journeying about his house from room to room to “write a history of the world without leaving home.”

I can conceive a few better ways to spend my spare
Revisado: 12-01-18
I can conceive a few better ways to spend my spare time then At Home with Bill Bryson.
As is always the case with his books, one is delighted by his fresh observations, insightful connections and an engaging wit that is present in the writing itself, and enhanced by his reading of it.
In this selection, an apparently mundane virtual stroll through the house presents a joy of history, etymology, science and delightful observations of humans interacting with each other and their world.
Find yourself a comfortable chair, pour some port, and enjoy!

Historia
Bill Bryson's first travel book, The Lost Continent, was unanimously acclaimed as one of the funniest books in years. In Neither Here Nor There he brings his unique brand of humour to bear on Europe as he shoulders his backpack, keeps a tight hold on his wallet, and journeys from Hammerfest, the northernmost town on the continent, to Istanbul on the cusp of Asia.

Delightful!
Revisado: 11-19-18
This is a delightful series of observations of the sort that only Bill Bryson can make. As always, he had me laughing and thinking. If you have never had the double pleasure of being exposed to Bill Bryson's writing and having the joy of hearing him read it, this is as good as any point to start. And you should start; you are in for a treat, and one which will have you hooked for many books to come. If you have already been exposed to him, I'm not really sure why you're reading this review. Purchase it already

Contrary to conventional wisdom, our brains and bodies are hardwired to carry out an evolutionary mission that determines much of what we do, from life plans to everyday decisions. With an accessible tone and a healthy disregard for political correctness, this lively and eminently readable book popularizes the latest research in a cutting-edge field of study: one that turns much of what we thought we knew about human nature upside-down.

Outstanding!
Revisado: 09-09-18
This is one of those extraordinary books in which the authors look behind what we do to explain why we do it. Without taking any moralistic view of whether our behavior is right or wrong, they look for natural hereditary reasons why it is. assuming that the science behind there writing is true -- and I have not done any research to determine whether it is -- this should be mandatory reading for every member of every society.

well-read fluff
Revisado: 09-08-18
Firstly, this is more of a recorded sermon than it is an audiobook. Like a sermon, the majority of the references are religious, with almost no science or empirical data included. Also like a sermon, the listenability is largely tied to the oratory skills of the person delivering it. Jim Rohn is a good speaker, sort of a Zig Ziglar knockoff.

This selection is comprised of a number of small lectures. Some of them are helpful, others are a waste of time. If you are able to sift through, there will be useful nuggets here, listen to it - you will probably get your money's worth, although not a good use of your time. If you prefer more solid and consistent content, skip this one.

I am a fan of stories the premise of which is based in time travel. Of the hundreds I have read, this is not the worst, but below average.
The premise is ridiculously flimsy, not worthy of a novel for adults. The characterization is okay, but the author reports to amateurish tricks to try to distinguish the protagonist's persona in various incarnations; rather that creating subtle differences, she resorts to "you never liked milk before" tropes. What kept me listening -- and frankly the only reason to listen to this one -- was the interesting perspective of the story being told by women; what issues would a woman displaced in time have that a man would not?
The narration was also lacking. The narrator was unable to create different voices that did not sound like caricatures. The listeners can also hear her flipping pages as she reads!

It did not live up to title or description
Revisado: 03-28-18
This audiobook was a disappointment. The first time I tried to listen to it, I got almost an hour into it before moving on to something more interesting and useful. Within the first hour, there was nothing practical, just blathering by a narcissist. At that point, I would have given it a zero stars. Fortunately for the author, I was recently on a long flight, unable to sleep and with nothing else to occupy me, so I returned to the book. It does improve after the first hour, but even so, it somrtimes has the feel of an infomercial for the author's website and other products.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

This is a beautifully written story and the performance is one of the best I have heard. The story is repleat with nuanced characters who come to life with perfect narration. Minor strains of credulity are easily forgiven as the listener is drawn into a fascinating journey set against the backdrop of the art and furniture restoration world.

Historia
For 18 years, Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alastair Smith have been revolutionizing the study of politics by turning conventional wisdom on its head. They start from a single assertion: Leaders do whatever keeps them in power. They don't care about the "national interest" - or even their subjects - unless they have to. This clever and accessible book shows that the difference between tyrants and democrats is just a convenient fiction.
