Oof. Wish I’d had a warning on this one.
Revisado: 04-11-25
Meg’s backstory involves verbal abuse from her father and husband that is so bad that she welcomes alien kidnapping. Then she has the most stalker like alien thus far to fall in love with. And she wins him over by submitting in a BDSM style. Then, unlike the other stories, she changes him to be a better man. I’m not judging tastes, I just wish I’d had a trigger warning on this one. It was rough for me. I would have rather she had joined Maxu in his illegal work rather than submit to and then convert him.

Bittersweet Amazingness
Revisado: 03-03-25
This is one of the best serial novels I’ve ever read. It is so amazingly bittersweet. I started it and then waited a year to finish it because I did not want it to end. It’s like The Last Unicorn but a cat in space. <3

Between grad school and multiple jobs, Naledi Smith doesn’t have time for fairy tales…or patience for the constant e-mails claiming she’s betrothed to an African prince. Sure. Right. Delete! As a former foster kid, she’s learned that the only things she can depend on are herself and the scientific method, and a silly e-mail won’t convince her otherwise. Prince Thabiso is the sole heir to the throne of Thesolo, shouldering the hopes of his parents and his people. At the top of their list? His marriage.

This story was sad.
Revisado: 03-03-25
This was not a rom com. This was a romance with lots of sad. I do have to say that the depiction of the feelings of a female scientist were EXTREMELY on point and well written in the beginning, but then the story diverged from that and focused on romance and family sadness. A very good book but NOT a rom com.

It did not disappoint on that front! :) And, though the pace was slow at first, I do have to say the solution to the murder was very satisfying. This was a good book to read before bed. Very chill and cute characters.

Historia
After 10 years at war, Jev Dharrow looks forward to hanging up his sword, relaxing with a cool mug of ale, and forgetting that the love of his life married another man while he was gone. But when his ship sails into port, a beautiful woman wearing the garb of an inquisitor from one of the religious orders waits to arrest him. He’s accused of stealing an ancient artifact with the power to start another war. Jev would gladly hand over the artifact to stop more suffering, but he has no idea where it is or even what it looks like. The inquisitor woman definitely has the wrong person.

Historia
Once upon a time...there was a girl whose father inhabited the body of a beast for a time and whose mother couldn't seem to keep her nose out of a book. Mirabel can't imagine summer without the solstice ball her family throws every year—the music, the roses, everything looking picture perfect, like it came out of one of her mother's books. But when a young man at the ball snubs an enchantress in disguise and chooses Mirabel to dance with instead, the summer begins to look a lot less wonderful.

Things are not what they seem.
Revisado: 07-23-24
A very chill, classical fairytale style voice on this adventure story. This might sound like a weird positive, but I let Shaye read me to sleep many nights in a row, often switching from another book that was not chill enough. However, the plot held enough tension to distract me from my daily worries.
The young prince Alexander and his absent-minded good nature really made the novel for me.

Purple sparkly dragon wings
Revisado: 07-23-24
This book was so cozy! Er, I mean, things exploded but somehow the explosions were sweet and I was a little worried but not too bad? Plus there multiple scenes with gay men levitating while wearing magical purple sparkling wings. XD Delightful.
Ambrose himself, a nervous recluse who worried all the time, was an adorable main character that, while slightly neurotic, was extremely relatable and cute. Eli... Eli kinda annoyed me, but OK, he has everything and still doesn’t know what his calling is. That’s fine. Especially when Ambrose is so infatuated with him. ;)

Vola might be new to this whole adventuring thing, but she’s pretty sure this isn’t how you’re supposed to save the day. No one at her academy wanted an orc as a paladin, so they’ve sent her to the back end of a swamp, hoping she’ll never find a quest good enough to earn her shield. Well, screw that. Vola’s got divine help, and even a laughingstock of a goddess can do some righteous smiting.

Light, Fun Read
Revisado: 06-25-24
This is a good book for people who enjoyed Legends & Lattes and don't mind fewer good descriptors that make you hungry. XD Vola is a half-orc paladin for the Goddess of Forgotten Women and Children*, and so has several things working against her in a world where it's not easy being green. It was hard to pick my favorite character, from the supportive mentor Henri, to the 'go for it' halfling*, to the klutzy mage*, to the androgynous ranger*, this was a delightful fast read between more serious books.
*OK, so I listened to the audiobook and can't remember names so good.

Wilda Firestone survives off black coffee and white-hot sarcasm. And despite the colorful slew of characters filing through her time tourism costume shop, the retired First Nations temporal agent would prefer a quiet, more linear existence. So she’s less than impressed when a dying explorer crashes into her store, unleashing a plague that sends countless travelers to an early doom....

Author did a very good job with pronunciation, best I could tell. Interesting to hear the author read their own story.
Historical time travel was interesting. The idea of a costume designer going back in time was fun.
Main protagonist was like your embarrassing great aunt, the one that knows everything and thinks it’s funny to call people idiots and watch others be hurt by their words.

Historia
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

Not a hard bio sci-fi
Revisado: 01-07-24
Came here looking for a hard bio sci-fi, because this was marketed as solar punk. It is not. This is more of a liberal arts fiction with a sci-fi setting. Lots of low level philosophizing about life’s purpose. A frustrating thing was the poor understanding of biology used to support those philosophies. Lots of bad nature versus nurture arguments, and the protagonist is upset about not having purpose in life, and or not making a mark on the world. Lots of long passages about food and smells. Good if you like that Sort of thing.
