Historia
Inspector Hemingway has his work cut out for him when a seemingly civilised game of Duplicate Bridge leads to a double murder. The crimes seem identical, but were they carried out by the same hand? Things become even more complicated when the fiancée of the inspector's young friend, Timothy Kane, becomes Hemingway's prime suspect. Kane is determined to prove the lady's innocence – but when he begins digging into her past, he finds it's more than a little bit shady.

Decent story; narration iffy
Revisado: 05-19-21
I liked this story. It was interesting and engaging. I normally like Ulli Birvé and have enjoyed several other Heyer novels narrated by her. But I have to agree with the other reviewers that her Scottish accent is about the worst I’ve ever heard. Most of the time the Scottish character sounded like a cat hacking up a fur ball - and occasionally seemed more Russian than anything else. He was so frequently unintelligible altogether that it made it hard to know what he said. Alas, this is major character in the story, so the annoyance is ongoing. It made it hard to enjoy the story, and I felt a bit relieved when it was over as a result. I would recommend the story with another narrator capable of a decent Scottish accent. And I would recommend several of the narrator’s other audio books. But this was not a winning combination.

It should have been a lovely English country-house weekend. But the unfortunate guest list is enough to exasperate a saint, and the host, Sir Arthur Billington-Smith, is an abusive wretch hated by everyone – from his disinherited son to his wife's stoic would-be lover. When Sir Arthur is found stabbed to death, no one is particularly grieved and no one has an alibi. The unhappy guests find themselves under the scrutiny of Scotland Yard's cool-headed Inspector Harding, who has solved tough cases before.

Great book and performance
Revisado: 04-10-21
I’ve read Heyer’s romances before and thoroughly enjoyed them. But this was my first mystery of hers. It did not disappoint. Her clever wit was evident throughout. Lots of very interesting and amusing characters and conversations. The performance was also very good. Excellent distinction between the characters, though the Major was so ponderously slow, it annoyed me every time he appeared. But thankfully he barely featured at all.

Not my favorite Agatha Christie
Revisado: 11-08-20
This story was a little high drama for my tastes, and the adventures of the “bright young things” a little too improbable. But it was performed well and fun enough to listen to. Just too easy to guess who the real Mr. Brown was. I prefer the Hercule Poirot series and some other Christie novels that have a little more subtlety. I felt this one was trying to imitate a Moriarty type criminal with less success.

Historia
Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is summoned to France after receiving a distressing letter with a urgent cry for help. Upon his arrival in Merlinville-sur-Mer, the investigator finds the man who penned the letter, the South American millionaire Monsieur Renauld, stabbed to death and his body flung into a freshly dug open grave on the golf course adjoining the property. Meanwhile the millionaire's wife is found bound and gagged in her room. Apparently, it seems that Renauld and his wife were victims of a failed break-in, resulting in Renauld's kidnapping and death.

Fantastic book
Revisado: 10-28-20
This was incredible. The story is an intriguing one, and I enjoyed it as I enjoy all Agatha Christie mysteries, but the performance really made it for me. Richard Armitage is a brilliant narrator in general, but his ability to capture so many varying French accents in this story was amazing. It really took me into the story. I hope he does more of these Hercule Poirot mysteries. Really enjoyed this one.

I have never loved Emma as much until I heard Juliet Stevenson narrate it. Perfection. She made the characters come to life. It’s even more delightful of a story when read by her.

Entertaining and interesting
Revisado: 01-23-20
I really enjoyed it. I was a fan of the Little House books and series, so it was fun to hear behind-the-scenes details about the cast and familiar episodes. Alison is also a very entertaining narrator. She’s had an interesting, though sometimes very sad, life but has maintained her sense of humor, which I found really admirable. I didn’t want to put it down and listened to the whole thing in about 48 hours.
She starts off with her early life and family, including her sexual abuse as a child, which was tough to listen to at times (certain things were a little triggering for me). But she talks about that with grace and strength. The next third or so of the book is about her experience in the show. That was the most fun for me. She’s quite witty and light hearted about her fellow cast members and fights in the mud with Melissa Gilbert. The last third of the book is about her personal life after the show, her friends and family, her activism, telling her abuse story, etc. I found her very courageous. Overall, really well done.

Not worth the time
Revisado: 12-22-19
I tried this for free, but it was so bad, I couldn’t finish it. The main character Lucinda is as grating a character as I’ve ever read. She’s remarkably stupid and doesn’t appear to change or become more intelligent at 19 than she was at 10, which is her age when the book opens. But she’s far from the only problem.
Her father is a despicable lecher and brute. Her grandmother is a psychopathic murderer. Her love interest is a kidnapper with a conscience who later tries to rush her into love. And she’s unrealistically prudish and nonsensical. She seems to think she can make facts go away by ignoring them. And her family encourages this. Basically, there was not one likeable character, and the plot line was ridiculously far-fetched.
The narrator did a decent job, but the book was just too awful to stand. After getting three-fourths of the way through, I decided I’d rather not know how it ends than waste another hour on this. I’d read another book by this author that I enjoyed many years ago, so I thought I would try this one, but it was a sad disappointment.
