Helpful, and grounded in science, not BS

This book was a godsend. If you’ve struggled with these problems, this book will help you immensely. Knowledge is power.
As someone who grew up masturbating regularly since 5 and viewing porn since 10, I have experienced all the issues mentioned in this book. This book confirms all I’ve already experienced with this addiction, backed by the accounts of others struggling with the same issues and scientific explanations that confirm the changes I’ve noticed in myself over the years.
I actually quit porn and masturbation entirely for 4 years during college, but once I started having sex with my first girlfriend at the end of college, I experienced what I now know was a Chaser, and ended up slowly crawling back down the hole to masturbation addiction. Since I had quit once, I thought it wasn’t as big a deal anymore. The first time, I quit on sheer will-power because I knew the effects it was having on me for my entire life and couldn’t let that ruin my college experience. I’d heard of the nofap forums, but never looked into it. Now, a few years into a new bout of masturbation addiction post-college, I was no longer sure why I was trying to quit again. After all, a Google search would yield results that masturbation is healthy, and my doctor had no explanation for the off and on ED I was experiencing with my girlfriend. After countless relapses and binges, attempting to quit but allowing myself to edge as if that wasn’t the problem, I finally sought out two books to help inspire me to quit again. The first was Quit Porn Get Rich, which was helpful and inspiring, but written in a sort of douchy way by an alpha male sounding young business man. Your Brain On Porn has completely solidified my understanding of such an integral part of my life, an addiction I have struggled with since I was a child, and how heavily viewing porn in my adolescent years effected my brain. I’ve never sought any guidance from anyone before and always struggled alone, but to hear that there is a whole community of people going through the same thing, and that our struggles are real and legitimate, and to understand the brain science behind what is going on is such a gift, it is beyond words.
It is a disgrace to society that this information isn’t common knowledge. Thank you Gary Wilson. This book is an absolute must-read for anyone experiencing any issue with porn or masturbation, and perhaps for all who aren’t as well (or who don’t ‘think’ they are). I agree that this is the new smoking. Spread the word.
This is not a matter of morality, it is a matter of addiction, and this addiction has far-reaching negative consequences. Anyone who has struggled can attest. Glad to know I’m not the only one. It’s very sort of life-affirming to better understand what has happened to me and why, especially as I started at such a young age. Sadly, kids will only be exposed to porn younger and younger due to advancing technology. Again, it’s not an issue of morality, it’s a serious addiction, and viewing porn in your formative years has a serious impact, literally on your brain. Anyone who doesn’t believe that, please read this book.
PS Although Noah the narrator sounds a bit bro-ish, he did an excellent job narrating the book, very engaging, thank you as well Noah!

Many situations we face require a particular predisposition and specific behavior. We often can’t behave properly, not only because of a lack of awareness, but also because of limitations posed by our bodies. It is very interesting how much depends on the well-being and physical fitness of your body. Unfortunately, many people don’t know much about the processes that drive it. I will do my best to make sure that in this book you learn about important issues related to your physical well-being and how to use them in practice.

You have to weed out the good bits, but helpful
Revisado: 04-27-23
I bought this book because the description resonated with me. I’ve struggled throughout my life with the issues discussed in the book and reached a similar conclusion that it negatively affects motivation and causes depression. It’s nice to hear someone synthesize these ideas into a book and corroborate them with scientific studies, and ultimately I’m finding the book very helpful. However, personally not everything resonates with me. Unfortunately it seems everyone who writes these kind of books is either a religious nut, or some kind of business bro. This author is the latter, but I’ll take it.
However it must be said, the performance is not very good. The narrator sounds like a bro and just plays up that vibe, mispronounces words, and worst of all, constantly puts the emphasis on the wrong parts of sentences, so you have to go rewind to figure it out. If the subject matter wasn’t as important to me I would’ve tried to return the book. Frustrating.
Also again, too much kinda masculine energy for my taste, but if you overlook that bit, other bits can be quite inspiring and helpful.

A good introduction to the music business, Joel and Matt bring different perspectives to the discussion and interview a diverse group of musicians and other industry insiders. Very interesting, especially for Umphrey’s fans 🤘🏻
