The simple yet penetrating insights to how bankrupt modern life is today… lived without memory or reference to the eternal permanent things.
Being blinded to the good that was real, and taking the bait offered by the peddlers of lies. Lies that, while promising what it can never deliver or satisfy beyond the intoxicating pleasure of the moment, lead many follow to their appetites to their eternal destruction.

I would recommend this book to any pastor or congregant who is stirred and looking for a greater vision of the church in, and advancing, Gods kingdom now.
If you personally, or your church corporately is stuck in a liturgical and/or cultural rut… then this book (reading) will (or should) expand your current vision so as to find some footing to get unstuck or out of whatever that rut is.
This was a helpful and insightful listen.

A Guide into Christian Discipleship for the rest of us

I was exposed to Eugene Peterson through his autobiography “The Pastor.” His simple, and yet profound way of communicating truth through story and scripture captivated my heart and directed my eyes heavenward.
A Long Obedience presents Christian discipleship through meditations on the Psalms of ascent, 120-134, is another story filled winsome gem. Chapter after chapter reveals the trustworthy, equipping, sustaining heart of the heavenly Father for the Christian pilgrim as he or she journeys through the hardships and joys of this life towards our eternal home. It isn’t a 12 step methodology, nor a “Celebration of Disciplines.” It is more a Celebration of God, his faithfulness, how He loves his people, and is leading, restoring, and forming them with every step they take.

First the narration was compelling to listen to. Voice, tone, speed, inflection made me think I was listening to Peterson himself speaking personally to me.
Finally, the content. I am not a pastor and never before entertained it. Following Peterson’s journey into and through the learning left me with the desire to be a pastor. Strange desire in light of his admission of it’s ambiguous nature, that his “vocation means giving witness to what we don’t know much about and can’t explain... living into the mystery of salvation and holiness.”
