Historia
The five most dangerous liars in the land have been mysteriously summoned to work together for a single objective: to kill the god king Joon. He has it coming. Under his merciless immortal hand, the nobles flourish, while the poor and innocent are imprisoned, ruined … or sold. And now each of the five blades will come for him. Each has tasted bitterness—from the hired hit man seeking atonement, a lovely assassin who seeks freedom, or even the prince banished for his cruel crimes.

Too many narrators
Revisado: 01-28-25
There were too many narrators for it not to be a full cas production. It got confusing as we heard each character’s voice from too many voice actors. It would have been great had the voice actors played the same parts no matter who’s POV we were in.
Overall I liked this. I’d never watch the movie. A bit too Quinton Tarantino vibes for me.
I did think the build up was slow but interesting. And the ending certainly had my heart racing.
Will read the next one via hard copy not audio.

Every time the narrator said lie-berry ((smh))
Revisado: 11-13-24
Very mid. Would not have finished the series if I hadn’t already bought the entire collection. Last book, book 5, was the best one but still annoying.
Idk if I’m just getting too old YA fantasy or what. But I often found this one pretty boring.
Also the narrator was mid. Like she had a pleasant enough voice but kept saying “lie berry” and her tone often didn’t match the description. It’s like she was truly just reading the words and not acting them.

That narrator might have ruined it for me.
Revisado: 01-09-24
Might have liked this more had I read it with my eyes instead of listening to it. The narrator is so bad. She sounds like a news anchor—way too polished, way too enunciated. I couldn’t stand it. There was absolutely nothing natural about her voice. Her voice alone is pleasant. It’s her cadence in the way she reads. IDK it just didn’t work for me.
But the writing didn’t compel me either. At first I was intrigued, but then I just wanted to be done. The ending was not twisty at all. And I just didn’t care about the characters.

Liked this one
Revisado: 11-10-23
Liked the narrator but rating down performance because production value was meh. There were random parts that sounded like they were spliced in later or something. Like it just took me out for a sec. But again, the narrator was good!
Liked the story. Would read this author again.

Not my fave LK
Revisado: 11-06-23
Maybe my least fave LK book I’ve read. It’s not bad, but it didn’t really work for me. I didn’t really like Derek the fmc.
It didn’t help that the narrator is not my fave either. Maybe in the hands of Mary Jane Wells, I’d have liked it more.

Historia
The DFZ, the metropolis formerly known as Detroit, is the world’s most magical city with a population of nine million and zero public safety laws. That’s a lot of mages, cybernetically enhanced chrome heads, and mythical beasties who die, get into debt, and otherwise fail to pay their rent. When they can’t pay their bills, their stuff gets sold to the highest bidder. That’s when they call me. I’m a Cleaner: a freelance mage employed by the DFZ to sort through the mountains of magical junk people leave behind. It’s not a pretty job, or a safe one....

Audio was meh. The different narrators pronounced the same words differently and I didn’t love some of the voices. They weren’t distinct. Idk.

Needed more POVs
Revisado: 03-22-23
3.5 stars
I liked this. I did. I did not love this. It took me most of the hook to figure out why, but I think I got it: there’s not enough POVs. It’s entirely from Keva’s perspective which got boring. I truly feel it would be beneficial for the reader to have more POVs. The view was just too limited with the one.
I will continue the series because I did enjoy it. It’s true YA imo, and I have enjoyed this return to the genre for me as my eldest is starting to read YA.
There is a twist at the end that will definitely hook readers. However, without going back am looking for clues, I feel it’s more bait-and-switch than true twist. Idk. Maybe not. But that’s how I felt a bit.
The narration is great. Jeanette Illidge did a great job differentiating each character.
Again. Overall enjoyed it. Hoping the next one adds more perspectives.
