As much cultural history as true crime

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 03-05-21

Schecter recounts a series of child murders during the Great Depression and in doing so illustrates the media landscape and cultural attitudes that linked these stories together in the public imagination. An enlightening bit of history.

I guess I expected this to be more of a history/sociology of white supremacist movements. Instead it leans a lot closer to memoir, detailing the author's own experiences in extremist chatrooms. It's an interesting and entertaining side of the issue but having already read a good deal of reporting on online extremism I'm not sure I learned much new info. Quick listen, the author delivers a good performance.

I often feel like there's a bit of a tradeoff with audio books -- the format is more convenient for me but a lot of prose translates awkwardly to the spoken word and I usually think the narration is just OK. Not this one. I would highly recommend that anyone interested in this book buy the audio version. Graham-Jones' writing is conversational, fast-paced, and funny, and Shaun Taylor-Corbett delivers it perfectly.

Overall the plot is as good as any horror novel I've read, which is to say it has a few holes but provides some truly memorable, gory, spooky imagery. It's also got a unique point of view with great complex characters, which is more than I can say for a lot of the genre.

Any additional comments?

And it's pretty dry. But if you have a lot of time to kill, it's an interesting perspective on the era. Good background for anyone who wants to understand the historical context of our political parties and electoral map.

Would you listen to The Woman Behind the New Deal again? Why?

It was a little too long, or maybe just gave too much time to a lot of scene-setting and personal anecdotes. But for the most part it was a great behind-the-scenes explanation of the politics and policies of the New Deal. I already admired Perkins, but it wasn't til i listened to this that I realized just how extraordinarily influential she was.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was floored by some of the excerpts from Perkins' letters where she discusses the difficulties of being the only woman in the room. It's heartbreaking the ways she had to navigate rules of etiquette that left her out of important discussions, or the ways that she had to compromise her true feelings in order to be heard.
