Historia
Tech City: Society is obsessed with relentless progress and the possibility of eternal life. A woman and a man meet in waiting room, anticipating a procedure that will incorporate the latest science and technology into their minds and bodies, heightening their awareness and increasing their productivity. Years pass, their relationship deepens and fades, and they grow increasingly uncertain where the AI stops and where they begin. A romantic drama exploring the potentiality of transhumanism, Life Ever After is a rich listening experience that is at once naturalistic and poetic.

Beautifully created

I listened to this within the same day in two sittings. It is a beautiful story of love, life, morals, and loss across decades. The narration and sound effects were spot on, creating an urgent mood. A poignant world was created, incredibly easy to visualize. I would listen to this many times over.

Short age gap romance with insensitive themes
Revisado: 01-31-21
I usually give all MK Chester books a 5 star rating as I love this author’s work, but this book had too many unfavorable themes for me to truly enjoy. I appreciate a romance the two characters must fight for, but the characters of Chelsea (the bride) and Gayle (the mother of the bride) were almost demonized for reacting to traumatic events. They also did many unrealistic actions that were written in borderline misogynistic fashion.
It wasn’t clear what made the love interests fall for each other so quickly other than “she’s so sexy” and “he’s a good guy.” The progression wasn’t very believable to me. I do like the setting of the affair happening days before the wedding though.
There were also multiple steamy scenes that occurred on the grounds of a historical plantation in which slaves used to live, which I found difficult to listen to as that was extremely insensitive.
As I read the audiobook version, the female narrator did not do the best job performing male voices. This made the steamy scenes awkward to listen to. Usually Chester’s female narrators do a more adequate performance. For this book especially, I would rather had a male narrator.
I received a free audiobook copy from Story Origin and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Interesting ethical dilemma!
Revisado: 01-13-21
This is my favorite story from this series! I love how the story makes the reader think. The main character must act through an ethical dilemma of upholding his allegiance to the empire, or doing what he thinks is best for the people. This fantastical story has beautiful character development and is easy to visualize. I appreciated the narrator’s smooth transitions from accent to accent. Overall it was an enjoyable listen!

Futuristic tale
Revisado: 01-13-21
This story is written like a dream. During the beginning, it was difficult to understand what was going on, but that made it more realistic as the reader feels just as confused as the main character, Jacob. Remnants takes place in a different setting from the first story in this series, planet Earth. It also has different characters. It is a fast paced narrative with beautiful imagery.
There are a few inconsistencies with the sound of the main characters voice, but the narrator did a good job otherwise, using different voices for different characters. Near the end of the story it became clearer how the two stories in the series are linked. I look forward to reading the next installment!

Action filled read
Revisado: 01-11-21
This is a nice beginning to a short series. I really like the set up of four stories in a series as they are bitesized narratives that can be read or listened to within an afternoon. Even though it was a short read, there was a sufficient plot and action. I wish there was a bit more explanation and world building, but I understand the stakes and motivation of the main character. The narrator is good at breathing life into the characters, although he sounds robotic during some moments. It was confusing as to why the audiobook formatted the story as only one chapter even though it is divided into 5 chapters written out. But overall, I am interested in seeing what happens next as I read the next books.

Disturbing Tale
Revisado: 01-09-21
The story was interesting at the beginning with a strong narrator, but there was not enough character development or stakes. The non-linear storyline was off putting, and the ending was not as surprising as it was disturbing. I appreciated that the narrator was the author herself though. The story had an interesting premise, I just wish it was developed a bit more.

Unlikeable characters with scattered plot
Revisado: 06-10-20
I was given a copy through Story Origin in exchange for an honest review. The beginning was off putting. It was frustrating to hear the main character say that she traveled to all these cities and countries such as Madrid, Venice, and New Zealand, and then said she helped build a church in Africa. Where in Africa? It’s an entire continent. Additionally, the entire beginning was showing and not telling. A long soliloquy of the character’s past that was hard to pay attention to. There was insensitive wording. For example, referring to patients as “Mr. ALS” and “Mr. Dementia” instead of as their names. The plot jumps around too far. I read another book by the same author that I enjoyed, so I was surprised with this one. The book doesn’t folloe the traditional structure of rising action, climax, falling action. Things just sort of happen. Also, the book went on for too long. I do admire the author’s ability to create many different characters for the patients, but there seemed to be too many that were left with incomplete character arcs. But it’s okay, not every story can be for everyone.

A sweet, short read
Revisado: 03-19-20
I enjoyed listening to this story. At a little under an hour long, I was still able to be invested in the characters. I think it would have been stronger if it was only written from one character’s point of view instead of multiple in the beginning, but it was still very enjoyable overall to listen to as background while I was cleaning my room.

Engaging story!
Revisado: 03-17-20
I appreciated this layered mystery. There were intriguing twists and turns throughout that were not easy to guess. Although I appreciated the story being told from the third person omniscient point of view, I found that there were many characters introduced unnecessarily without being given rounded story arc. Even so, I enjoyed listening to this book while driving and cleaning. It was a great read.
