Disappointing
Revisado: 04-17-22
When I saw Kara Thomas wrote a new book, I was so excited I bought That Weekend as soon as I saw it. Unfortunately, this is a disappointing follow up to Kara’s previous work; the pacing is too slow then too fast, the mystery is solved two-thirds into the book, and the main narrator is less interesting than the rest of the characters.
Kara Thomas is an excellent writer, but this isn’t her best work. I highly recommend you read her other books, even if you didn’t like That Weekend.

Historia
In Gold Coast, Long Island, everything from the expensive downtown shops to the manicured beaches, to the pressed uniforms of Jill Newman and her friends, looks perfect. But as Jill found out three years ago, nothing is as it seems. Freshman year Jill's best friend, the brilliant, dazzling Shaila Arnold, was killed by her boyfriend. After that dark night on the beach, Graham confessed, the case was closed, and Jill tried to move on.

Not good, but not bad
Revisado: 11-19-20
The murder mystery at elite high school is a good premise, but the author didn’t deliver on both. I enjoyed the murder mystery, even if it was fairly formulaic. I really felt Jill’s loss and her struggle between moving on and I conversing the truth.
But the secret society (aka The Players) felt more like a plot devise than a story. In the first half of the book, I think you could drop the secret society without changing much of the book. Even later in the book the secret society did little more than five the main characters reasons to act or feel bad, without adding to the plot.
Overall, it’s not the best book, but it’s not the worst. It works as good background noise for anyone who enjoys YA murder mysteries, but don’t expect much else.

Historia
A young woman haunted by a family tragedy is caught up in a dangerous web of lies and deception involving a secret society in this highly charged, addictive psychological thriller that combines the dishy gamesmanship of Gossip Girl with the murky atmosphere of The Secret History. One summer day, Grace Fairchild, the beautiful young wife of real estate mogul Alistair Calloway, vanished from the family’s lake house without a trace, leaving behind her seven-year old daughter, Charlie, and a slew of unanswered questions.

Great Character Development and Exploration
Revisado: 03-06-20
Overall, this was an enjoyable book to listen to. The pacing was perfect, and Klehforth did a great job interweaving different perspectives and using non-linear storytelling to build suspension and intrigue. Klehforth also does an excellent job presenting the narrators/main characters - Charlie, Grace, and Astaire - as complex character that you care about without excusing their bad behavior or decisions. And the character development, especially with Charlie, was great.
My main critique is the epilogue; it felt a forced, like Klehfoth had to explain everything that happened after the story ended and couldn't leave anything to the reader's imagination. I personally prefer open-ended stories, so this is more personal preference and the epilogue is only five minutes, so it doesn't affect the story too much.

Meh then wow
Revisado: 03-02-20
The beginning and middle were ok but kinda boring. It set the main plot points and characterization, but a lot of the writing was more focused on the author’s personal views rather than telling a good story. Some parts were just lecturing and I had to skip forward. The narrator for Ruthie has limited range, and most of the characters sounded the same.
The ending was twisted and totally shocked me; it made the rest of the book worth the listen. The narrator for Zarah was fantastic, using different tones, pacing, and intonations to set the mood and differentiate the characters.
Overall, you could probably skip over a decent chunk of the book and still enjoy the ending.

Riveting and Suspensful
Revisado: 02-27-20
This is a great book for anyone interested in the dark, twisted corners of humanity. The book is layered with murder mysteries, psychological exploration, and how complex and complicated people are. The narrator is great, using varying intonation, speed, and raw emotion to bring the story to life.

Kacey is the new girl in Broken Falls. When she moved in with her father, she stepped into a brand-new life. A life with a stepbrother, a stepmother, and, strangest of all, an adoring younger half sister. Kacey's new life is eerily charming compared with the wild highs and lows of the old one she lived with her volatile mother. And everyone is so nice in Broken Falls - she's even been welcomed into a tight new circle of friends. Bailey and Jade invite her to do everything with them.

They really are little monsters
Revisado: 02-24-20
This book is more of a psychological thriller than murder mystery. The book is driven by character exploration, with each chapter revealing a new, unexpected layer.
The real mystery isn’t “who did it?”; the real mystery is “who are these people, really? Who is hiding themselves, who is repressing themselves, and who is showing their true selves?”.

A murder mystery that you can’t put down
Revisado: 02-21-20
This is a great murder mystery story. Although the protagonist is a teenage girl, this isn’t typical YA fiction; anyone who enjoys a good mystery, filled with twists and compelling characters, will enjoy the book.
The sound effects and other voice actors add a level of realism that you can’t get from just reading a book. Along with the main narrator, who is one of the best I’ve heard, all the sound effects and voice actors make the story much more real and present in your mind.

Captivating and Shocking
Revisado: 02-11-20
A mesmerizing story about messed up people doing messes up things, revealing the dark yet tragic underbelly of human nature. Each chapter adds a new layer to the story and characters, always keeping you on your toes. The story starts as a classic young adult murder mystery, but ends up a poignant tale of love and hate, truth and lies, and redemption.

Understanding the ethnic tapestry of America
Revisado: 12-23-19
This is a fantastic book for understanding the histories of ethnic groups in America, and understanding how those histories tie into the history of America as a whole. This book isn’t political or decisive, but simply a record of complex histories of complex people.
I highly recommend this book (or any Thomas Sowell book) to anyone who wants to expand their understanding of America, and the world.
