Historia
Dr. Margaret Richter has it all. She’s rich, thanks to her best-selling self-help books. She has a beautiful home in Cape Cod overlooking the beach. And she has a monthly book club that everyone is dying to get invited to. Literally. Because behind the crystal wine glasses, the fine linens and the catered hors d'oeuvres lies a tangled web of secrets, of deceit, of murder. No member of the book club is innocent—and many are guilty. And the person with the most to hide is Margaret Richter herself.

The supernatural, the surreal, and the all-too real...tales of the dark. Such stories have always fascinated us, and modern authors carry on the disquieting traditions of the past while inventing imaginative new ways to unsettle us. Chosen from a wide variety of venues, these stories are as eclectic and varied as shadows.

Not really fantasy or horror
Revisado: 04-08-25
These stories aren’t bad but calling this a collection of dark fantasy and horror is not accurate. Or maybe I just have a different idea about what that category means. I expect stories in this genre to make me squirm a bit - these stories aren’t dark or horror. The stories are engaging but pretty bland.

Historia
The West Texas desert towns of Inferno and Bordertown have been slowly dying. The Snake River isn’t the only thing that divides them. Racism and gang wars have turned the sun-scorched flatlands into a powder keg. If anything can unite them now, it’s the UFO that comes crashing through the clouds. It brings with it a young alien named Daufin, a fugitive who has taken human form. She knows the terror that awaits this planet—because it’s looking for her.

Late ‘80s story that hasn’t aged well
Revisado: 09-13-23
I am playing catch up on some of McCammon’s earlier works, and I didn’t enjoy this one as much as some others. Some really dated “lingo” in here (if I hear the term ‘smash fox’ one more time I will scream) and the book was really all over the place with themes and social commentary. Was also nit a huge fan of this narration.

Stick with it for a great tale
Revisado: 08-24-23
I found this to be a very slow burn for the first 1/4 of the book or so, but it takes some twists and turns and turns into a very Dean Koontz story.

Great story about what happens when a bunch of kids get stranded in a mega-amusement park after a major hurricane. Combines World War Z and Lord of the Flies into a very compelling contemporary look at survival and social media deprivation.
