Lots of little juicy tidbits you won’t hear on a documentary on The History Channel. Makes you wish that Queen Victoria’s diaries and letters hadn’t been edited by her daughter or that Czarina Alexa hadn’t destroyed her diaries and love letters.

I first read this 50 years ago and have reread it often over the years. It still has the power to move me. Finding it in a audible book was a delight.

Bored to tears -- how is that even possible?

I didn't get far into this audible. I gave up when there was a long and horrid discussion about why Mary, of Biblical fame, wasn't related to Joseph therefore their sexual relationship was A-OK -- or something like that. My eyes had glazed over by then. I expected something more based in reality, not intense investigation into thousand year old stories that may or may not be even true in the first place. And I really don't care about Biblical stories at *all*. I returned it for a refund. Maybe it got better later in the book but I doubt it.

For the record: I rarely leave less than a stellar review so you know this had to be bad.

One of my favorite medicine-based books

I love the odd medical stories and this one has lots of them. It's very fascinating. I do a re-listen every once and a while just to enjoy it again. If medical oddities are your thing, you're going to enjoy it, too. It's not a technical read, just some odd stories gathered up from old medical journals and presented in a very interesting manner. They are often fascinating, horrifying, awesome and stunning by turn. You'll appreciate modern medicine a lot better after hearing some of these tales.

I found the two-person narration very well done, too. I really did thoroughly enjoy this book.

Absolutely enthralling account of the work that went into tracking down this monster and the wonderful ways that DNA is now being used to help. Absolutely fascinating. Great work, Amazon. Contains interviews with the people actually involved in the search.
