Historia
Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Numbing—like Novocaine
Revisado: 06-22-23
Without peer pressure (our book group selection) I would never have finished this book. Achingly overlong. Mildly interesting. Learned more about gaming than I ever cared to know. Most of the characters seemed numb — or maybe that was just the effect of the monotonal narrator. Sounded like she was reading herself to sleep, along with me!

Historia
It’s 1986, the heart of the Cold War, and Marie Mitchell is an intelligence officer with the FBI. She’s brilliant, but she’s also a young Black woman working in an old boys’ club. Her career has stalled out, she’s overlooked for every high-profile squad, and her days are filled with monotonous paperwork. So when she’s given the opportunity to join a shadowy task force aimed at undermining Thomas Sankara, the charismatic revolutionary president of Burkina Faso whose Communist ideology has made him a target for American intervention, she says yes.

What was that about?
Revisado: 09-30-20
Terrific narrator. Relationships between family characters were sweet. (Spoiler alert): Where were Marie’s motivations? —Why did she take on a professional assignment that she originally balked at on moral grounds? Why kill her ex-brother-in-law? Why would Ross want to kill her? Why risk her family’s safety by deciding to kill Ross? Why ask poor Ronnie to help her do the deed? I guess author left us awaiting a sequel. . . . I won’t be going along on Marie’s next adventure.

Thoroughly enjoyed this set of podcasts. At times, Mark Fennell came off as a little too naive but overall, an unbiased look at one of our state’s primary industries.

Historia
Does nature really make us feel better? The 3-Day Effect takes a look at the science behind why being in the wild can make us happier, healthier, and more creative. Whether it’s rafting down Utah’s Green River, hiking in Utah’s wilderness, or walking through Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC, scientists are finding that the more exposure humans have to nature, the more we can benefit from reduced anxiety, enhanced creativity, and overall well-being.

Nature nurtures your soul
Revisado: 05-26-19
By far the most emotionally stirring and yet totally enjoyable Audible freebie I’ve heard to date.
I can attest to the value of time spent out of doors. My super-active pup and I hike 3-5 miles daily. Sometimes I don’t *want* to go, and those are the hikes that most profoundly improve my mood.
This is definitely worth a listen, all in one go if you can spare the time.

Revisado: 01-29-19
If you’re a beginner exploring meditation or, like myself, someone returning to meditation practice, this is a nice series. The narrator’s kind and encouraging, many breathing techniques are introduced, the music is not invasive. If you’re already a meditator, perhaps this series isn’t for you. But for the rest of us, this series reveals or re-explores the joys and benefits of meditation.

Historia
Nearly two weeks early, on March 3, 1947, in the maternity ward of Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, Archibald Isaac Ferguson, the one and only child of Rose and Stanley Ferguson, is born. From that single beginning, Ferguson’s life will take four simultaneous and independent fictional paths. Four identical Fergusons made of the same DNA, four boys who are the same boy, go on to lead four parallel and entirely different lives. Family fortunes diverge. Athletic skills and sex lives and friendships and intellectual passions contrast.

It all grew tiresome
Revisado: 04-11-18
Intriguing theme, exploring “the road(s) not taken.” But successful authors need an editor just as much as anyone else. 4 3 2 1 went on (and on) for way too long & needs a good pruning.
Author Paul Auster narrated the book, sounding tired, adenoidal and slightly depressed.
At about the 2/3rds mark, I didn’t know which of the three Ferguson characters was which and frankly didn’t really care anymore. Game over!

Historia
Even decades after their arrival, Corrine and Russell Calloway still feel as if they're living the dream that drew them to New York City in the first place: book parties or art openings one night and high-society events the next; jobs they care about (and in fact love); twin children whose birth was truly miraculous; a loft in TriBeCa and summers in the Hamptons. But all of this comes at a fiendish cost.

Good summertime read; fabulous narration
Revisado: 08-08-16
There's no real solution to the dilemma explored in this book (in McInerney's own words): "Whether true love can exist between husband and wife and whether lovers have any right to be jealous of spouses. A love both ellicit and spiritually elevating existed outside the legal sphere of marriage. Possession blunted desire -- while the unattainable lover shimmered like a brilliant star -- and festered in the heart like a shard of crystal."

Narration spoils story
Revisado: 05-17-15
After listening to My Brilliant Friend, I won't listen to the sequels. I didn't enjoy the narrator, who repeatedly mispronounced the name of one of the main characters: Leela? Lyla? Lola? Come on now!!! (In the author's defense, friends who READ the book enjoyed it more than I did LISTENING to it.)

Historia
Barbara Demick's Nothing to Envy follows the lives of six North Koreans over fifteen years - a chaotic period that saw the death of Kim Il-sung and the unchallenged rise to power of his son, Kim Jong-il, and the devastation of a far-ranging famine that killed one-fifth of the population. Taking us into a landscape never before seen, Demick brings to life what it means to be an average Korean citizen, living under the most repressive totalitarian regime today.

Compelling Story
Revisado: 02-26-15
Loved the story, had trouble occasionally keeping track of the characters. At times it appeared that the author either did not understand the cultural significance or did not like the tradition, for instance the description of the soup celebrating the birth of a child. Also, I did not care for the narrator. At times I found the recording difficult to listen to due to the narrator's style..
