Historia
In a Tokyo suburb, a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife’s missing cat—and then for his wife as well—in a netherworld beneath the city’s placid surface. As these searches intersect, he encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists. Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels.

Almost stopped reading multiple times because of the narrator
Revisado: 01-29-24
I am nearing the end of the book and fully enjoying the story but I am still battling the desire to stop listening because the narrator is so terrible. I am surprised to have made it this far. His voices for May and Noboru’s assistant are atrocious and grating. I do not understand why the decision was made to take such an intense and annoying direction with these characters and it is extremely distracting to the story.

Enjoyable but not Trollope’s best
Revisado: 06-09-23
Britton’s reading is superb and made this story much more entertaining than it would have been otherwise. The story’s premise is good, but Trollope repeats himself in the various characters’ inner dialogues in a way that doesn’t add dimension. Still, Trollope - even not at his best - is better than most.

Historia
This audiobook is about the rise and fall of Michael Henchard. While out-of-work he gets drunk at a fair and impulsively sells his wife and baby for five guineas to a sailor. Eighteen years later he is reunited with his wife and daughter, who discover that he has gained wealth and respect and is now the most prominent man in Casterbridge. Though he attempts to make amends he is no less impulsive and once again loses everything due to bad luck and his violent, selfish and vengeful nature.

Terrific though plodding after the halfway point
Revisado: 05-29-19
If you love a good Thomas Hardy story, this won’t disappoint. Masterfully read, it unfolds with one Hardy-esque twist after another that has you silently shouting, “Don’t do it!” while eagerly listening to hear what with unfold as the result. Only criticism is that it lags and seems to go on a bit too long, but that is doubtless a modern reader’s impatience. Overall, it is definitely worth the listen.

Historia
In Phineas Finn, the second of the Palliser series, Trollope balances the rival demands of public and private life. Phineas Finn, an irresistible but penniless young Irish barrister enters Parliament and comes to London leaving behind him an Irish sweetheart, Mary Flood-Jones. In London, Phineas wins friends on all sides and is admitted into high society. However, he also falls more-or-less in love, first with politically-minded Lady Laura Standish, then with Violet Effingham, and finally with wealthy widow Madame Max Goesler.

Loving Trollope!
Revisado: 04-06-16
Just the most satisfying read-though it leaves you hungry for more, so you will want to read others in the Palliser series. I first read "Can You Forgive Her?" and enjoyed the overlapping characters and equal charm of "Phineas Finn" very much.
The window Trollope gives the reader into the inner thoughts of his characters is so entertaining that I found myself laughing out loud at the self-justification and rumination. Only Trollope can make fickle emotions so very charming. Having found the same to be true in "Can You Forgive Her", I cannot wait to read another in the next in the Palliser Series to see if that is a Trollope hallmark.
Reading a little about Trollope's experience of political life will increase your enjoyment.
The reader is superlative! I will be looking for more read by him.
I am sad to be finished, but will attempt to find consolation by moving on to "The Eustace Diamonds"!
