Predictable, but well paced
Revisado: 09-18-24
Although pretty much nothing in this story surprised me, or even particularly impressed me, I found it entertaining and a little spicy and almost like a checklist of all the expected items you’d find in a romance fantasy book. I was recommended this series by a couple of people, and while I get why they liked it, and I’ll probably listen to the second one, I don’t know that this is a book that I would recommend to others? If only because I found everything to be so predictable.

So thorough and entertaining
Revisado: 03-01-22
Stephen Fry’s final book in the trilogy nails down both his passion for the topic and his commitment to keeping the content as informative and entertaining as possible. I’ve read so many books on ancient Greece and Troy specifically but somehow Fry has managed to add even more detail and context. I’ll have to listen several times to catch everything! I think the ending could have continued into what happened to the brothers Menelaus and Agamemnon.

Great companion to Song of Achilles
Revisado: 10-01-21
I enjoyed how much this was a natural reflection to song of Achilles but I found the British slang to be very distracting.

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

Incredible narration and immersive story
Revisado: 07-05-21
The narrator in particular did an incredible job voicing all the characters distinctly and without mocking their gender differences. And I’ve never read a book quite like this from the perspective of someone who is there

Historia
Meet Jim Carrey. Sure, he's an insanely successful and beloved movie star drowning in wealth and privilege — but he's also lonely. Maybe past his prime. Maybe even...getting fat? He's tried diets, gurus, and cuddling with his military-grade Israeli guard dogs, but nothing seems to lift the cloud of emptiness and ennui. Even the sage advice of his best friend, actor, and dinosaur skull collector Nicolas Cage isn't enough to pull Carrey out of his slump.

Wild and Mystic
Revisado: 09-09-20
Jeff Daniels has intuitive knowledge of Carrey’s voices and intentions without impersonating anyone.
This is the wildest biography I’ve ever read, made all the wilder by its prophetic themes in our current times. Loved it and would recommend it to any fan of his and philosophy, pop culture, etc.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Dynamic narrator. Meeting all these heroic figures and visiting the sites of legendary tales, but through the eyes of such a UNIQUE narrator. Love him, love the narration.
