Historia
Upending the conventional theory that generational differences are caused by major events, Dr. Jean Twenge analyzes data on 39 million people from robust national surveys—some going back nearly a century—to show that changes in technology are the underlying driver of each generation’s unique makeup. In this revelatory work, Twenge outlines key shifts in attitudes and lifestyle choices that define each generation regarding gender, income, politics, race, sexuality, marriage, mental health, and much more.

Helpful, data-driven synthesis
Revisado: 07-04-23
I enjoyed this. As a late Boomer with Silent parents, Gen Z kids and students, and GenX and Millennial friends, it was helpful to hear what is driving each generational cohort. Despite the number of chart references (available in the accompanying pdf), I could understand the arguments and certainty recognized the people I know in the descriptions of each group. Twenge has structured the chapters similarly, introducing each generation with favorite names and famous members, and manages to stay mostly neutral in her descriptions. I’m recommending the book to friends and family, and I did order the print edition because I’m interested in the charts and want to have it for reference.
The narrator is fine and clear, just a bit inconsistent in speed.
Twenge’s commitment to using data to help us understand each other is refreshing. Highly recommend.

Censored with beeps--should be labeled as such
Revisado: 02-28-23
As at least one other reviewer has noted, some slurs are beeped out. This is the first of my (more than 500) Audible audiobooks where this is the case. At first, I thought something was beeping in my house! The reader is excellent, but the beeping is distracting and arguably draws more attention to the slurs than would be otherwise.
In my opinion, this is Hemingway in the 1920s and should be allowed to stand as is. I am very thankful that things have changed, but it's good for us to be aware of how things were in the past. But that's just my opinion. If there are readers who feel the need for this censorship, they might like to know that this version contains it. Audible should label this version and any other censored works as such.

Historia
Celebrated author and newspaper columnist Rick Bragg brings us an ode to the stories and history of the Deep South, filled with “eclectic nuggets about places and people he knows well” (USA Today) and written with honesty, wit, and deep affection. A collection of wide-ranging and endearingly personal columns — from Bragg’s love of Tupperware (his mother preferred margarine tubs and thought Tupperware was “just showing off”) to the decline of country music, from the legacy of Harper Lee to the metamorphosis of the pickup truck.

Rick Bragg’s prose voice is so true that I can hear him just reading the words. Hearing him read them is like sitting down at the table with an old friend. Lovely.

Historia
Richard M. Weaver argues that the decline of Western civilization resulted from the rising acceptance of relativism over absolute reality. In spite of increased knowledge, this retreat from the realist intellectual tradition has weakened the Western capacity to reason, with catastrophic consequences for social order and individual rights. But Weaver also offers a realistic remedy. These difficulties are the product not of necessity, but of intelligent choice.

Had a hard time with the reader
Revisado: 10-16-21
The reader’s rather high pitched intonation and British accent were jarring for a book by a Southern author. The content is excellent, challenging to fully take in via audio—at least for me—but tightly argued. I would have enjoyed it more with a different narrator.

Midwestern movie house owner Virgil Wander is "cruising along at medium altitude" when his car flies off the road into icy Lake Superior. Virgil survives, but his language and memory are altered, and he emerges into a world no longer familiar to him. Awakening in this new life, Virgil begins to piece together his personal history and the lore of his broken town, with the help of a cast of affable and curious locals. Into this community returns a shimmering prodigal son who may hold the key to reviving their town.

Despite the slow start, some lovely eccentric characters—Enger’s strong suit in my opinion—captured my interest and curiosity. The performance is excellent. I especially enjoyed the kites.

Disturbing adaptation if you know the novels well
Revisado: 06-17-20
Lovely voices and performances but I found it very distracting to hear lines of dialogue redistributed, especially in Pride and Prejudice. Not my favorite, but a nice review.

Revisado: 03-10-20
I thoroughly enjoyed this performance. The translation is amazing, and the reader is excellent. My sympathies have always been with Hector and the Trojans, but I finally found some appreciation for Achilles through this translation, which strikes a perfect note between the loftiness of epic and modern diction. I highly recommend it.

So glad I read this!
Revisado: 11-26-19
As someone with a lifelong love of Africa, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Kamkwamba’s descriptions of Malawians and their struggles, especially during famine were hard and important to hear. His own persistence and positive attitude are truly inspiring. I will assign this book to my students—it is bound to inspire them as well. The narrator’s African English was music to my ears and really kept me “in” the story. An excellent story and performance. Well done!

Historia
This is the most distinguished novel that has come out of South Africa in the 20th century, and it is one of the most important novels of the modern era. Cry, the Beloved Country is in some ways a sad book; it is an indictment of a social system that drives native races into resentment and crime; it is a story of Fate, as inevitable, as relentless, as anything of Thomas Hardy's. Beautifully wrought with high poetic compassion, Cry, the Beloved Country is more than just a story, it is a profound experience of the human spirit.

Revisado: 09-02-19
At first I was not sure I would like the narration, but York’s Afrikaner won me over. The pacing is excellent, the pronunciation clear and confident, and he handles Paton’s stylistic repetition of descriptive passages beautifully. The voicing of characters is distinctive, helping the listener keep them straight. The story and characters are unforgettable. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Good material, especially the last few chapters
Revisado: 05-22-15
Though dated, this is a good introduction to a Christian reading of literature that is neither condescending nor trite. I appreciate it being available in audio form and will want the paper book for the evenhanded treatment of post modernism alone. The narrator's voice is somehow harsh and sharp. It almost hurt my ears, and sometimes he mispronounced. I would not prefer to hear him again. It may be the recording.
