Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Genius
Revisado: 01-01-25
The way you hate this main character but stick along for the plot is an amazing work of commentary on today's social media culture. In addition, the playing out of devil's advocate angles are very well done. It's a book you wish your family member who is dismissive of "woke" culture would read so they can really understand how harmful things like microaggressions, intrinsic biases, and the white lady victim framing default really are.

awful story and reading
Revisado: 01-06-24
this premise has potential but the plot veers so quickly here and there. this is the worst book I've ever been exposed to. on top of the bad writing the production is poorly done with varying volumes and seems to be randomly dubbed over in some parts.

my favorite series upheld
Revisado: 09-04-23
I keep preparing for the sequels to be disappointing but each expands further on the philosophical questions posed in the previous through a riveting story with complex characters. whenever someone asks for book recommendations I give this series

I started listening to this book while walking my dog. Eventually I kept listening after a walk and finished the book in a 7 hour sitting.
The performance is really great work

Intriguing from start to finish
Revisado: 12-22-20
I wasn't totally sure I'd like this book, but pretty early on I was sucked in. I truly appreciated the storyline and characters throughout the entirety of the book. I listened to the last fourth or so in one sitting because I couldn't stop!
The reading was also a very good performance and felt very natural.
I highly recommend this listen!

Plot twisting and engaging
Revisado: 12-14-20
I really loved the performance in addition to the story. I haven't decided if I liked the ending but it is what it is. The writing kept me engaged and guessing, and sometimes appalled, all the way to the end.

Beautifully written and read
Revisado: 08-24-20
I have never read a book twice. I will be listening to this book again, I'm sure of it. The story line was beautifully written, and read. I love the mystery components of the book; I was so intrigued and confidently guessing what would unfold itself. I was hooked on the little hints and ultimate emotional complexity of the story that ended up being told.
