Historia
Adie Lou Kruger’s ex never understood her affection for what her parents called their Cozy Cottage, the charming, ramshackle summer home - complete with its own set of rules for relaxing - that she’s inherited on Lake Michigan. But despite the fact she’s facing a broken marriage and empty nest and that middle age is looming in the distance, memories of happy childhoods on the beach give her reason for hope. But converting the beloved, weather-beaten structure into a bed-and-breakfast isn’t quite the efficient home-reno experience she’s seen on TV.

Meh. A little too sweet for me. I generally enjoy this author, but not this book.

Be Still and Chill
Revisado: 07-12-23
Naturescapes is the balm for the anxious mind. I love this listen! I’ve used it to enhance my meditation and even to increase my focus and calm my “squirrel mind” when I work. I often wake up in the middle of the night and have trouble quieting my mind. So I reach for my earbuds and listen to a track to fall back asleep. The tracks are nice and long, and I'm always asleep before one ends. (Be sure to set a sleep timer to stop the track at the end.)
This recording comes with a bonus PDF chock-full of 51 special self-care tips and relaxing techniques to ease stress and help alleviate anxiety. Who can’t use a dose of stress relief these days?

Historia
In Chinese, the word for America, Mei Guo, translates directly to “beautiful country”. Yet when seven-year-old Qian arrives in New York City in 1994 full of curiosity, she is overwhelmed by crushing fear and scarcity. In China, Qian’s parents were professors; in America, her family is “illegal”, and it will require all the determination and small joys they can muster to survive. In Chinatown, Qian’s parents labor in sweatshops. Instead of laughing at her jokes, they fight constantly, taking out the stress of their new life on one another.

Bittersweet, beautiful story
Revisado: 01-14-22
Qian Julie Wang's story was captivating--crafted masterfully and told in the voice of the child she was when the events took place. Her memories were fascinating, uplifting, and heartbreaking. At times it was hard to continue because it was so sad. How can a country like ours allow a child, no matter her status, to go hungry or without decent clothes to wear? It didn't help that her parents lived in such fear, of course. The ending left me wanting to know more--proof of an outstanding memoir. I think this is an important book, and I'm glad I listened to it.

Historia
When Desert Solitaire was first published in 1968, it became the focus of a nationwide cult. Rude and sensitive. Thought-provoking and mystical. Angry and loving. Both Abbey and this book are all of these and more. Here, the legendary author of The Monkey Wrench Gang, Abbey's Road and many other critically acclaimed books vividly captures the essence of his life during three seasons as a park ranger in southeastern Utah.

Beautiful, almost lyrical, writing and the author’s reverence for nature makes this book a treasure.

Powerful story, poorly narrated
Revisado: 06-01-17
What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?
The narrator for the character Robin was hard to listen to. She might as well have been reading the encyclopedia.
Any additional comments?
The story was good enough to keep me listening despite the narration. I am glad I only paid the Daily Deal price for it.

Any additional comments?
I read this book when it was first published. I love the audio version even more. Kull's year alone on an isolated island in Patagonia comes alive in his narration. He shares with authentic vulnerability his triumphs, his tragedies, his disappointments, and his spiritual growth. If you yearn for such a transformative adventure, try living vicariously through Kull's recounting of a 21st-century Walden. (Your experience will be much more comfortable! No freezing rain, relentless winds, precarious boat trips, spoiled food stores, or endless collections of firewood!)
