Historia
A self-proclaimed "myth buster by trade," Barbara Ehrenreich has covered an extensive range of topics as a journalist and political activist, and is unafraid to dive into intellectual waters that others deem too murky. Now, Had I Known gathers the articles and excerpts from a long-ranging career that most highlight Ehrenreich's brilliance, social consciousness, and wry wit.

So funny and prescient
Revisado: 06-01-24
Her satire is beyond compare, had me in stitches, and many of the older pieces are quite prescient in retrospect and aren’t available anywhere on the internet. I know, because I kept trying to find the individual articles to send to friends

Historia
Sixty percent of humanity - some four-point-three billion people - live in debilitating poverty. The standard development narrative suggests that alleviating poverty in poor countries is a matter of getting the internal policies right, combined with aid from rich countries. But anthropologist Jason Hickel argues that this approach misses the broader political forces at play. Global poverty - and the growing divide between "developing" and "developed" countries - has to do with how the global economy has been designed over the course of 500 years. Global inequality doesn't just exist; it has been created.

Actually a really engaging read
Revisado: 05-21-24
I at first thought this might be bad because it was free and because it necessarily retrod the history of colonialism that many of us are already familiar with. But it’s so much more than that. So many of the observations and explanations about economic policy are fascinating, clearly laid out, and convincing. The author has no shortage of layers to his argument and the overall picture is extremely compelling. I found myself hooked all the way through the end despite not being sure if I would bother finishing the book when I first downloaded it. This is also a good companion to David Graeber’s “Debt” if you’ve read that.

With the pandemic looming, a listless social media editor accepts a job working for her former college friend Seraphina. A popular Instagram influencer, the subject of obsessive message-board surveillance, and a newly minted Karen of the Day, Seraphina is living out 2020 in the luxury of her “ultimate self-quarantine.” As the year escalates into upheaval and chaos, both women try, in increasingly secretive and complicated ways, to maintain the upper hand.

I like the author’s other work but this was boring and lifeless. The narrator did an okay job but paused in weird places like they were having trouble keeping up with their reading

Wish it were better
Revisado: 07-02-23
This book tried, but there just wasn’t very much there. I think in the hands of a more experienced author, or this author with a decade more experience, it could have been good, but in this form it just didn’t have much to say. A lot of the chapters felt rambling, repetitive, or tangential, like someone trying to meet a page limit. I read a lot of non-fiction and I’m used to books with more of a mission. This was, as the author said at the beginning, a meandering self-reflection. The lack of interest in South America, Asia, or other parts of the world that other reviewers pointed out also speaks to its oddly uncurious approach. The author clearly did a lot of research, but again in a sort of meandering way that lacks systematic rigor. To the author’s credit, the disclaimers at the beginning kind of lay this out. Those self-aware disclaimers should be part of the marketing material as well to avoid negative reviews from disappointed readers like me.

A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants can change their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters. Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement.

Have read three times and it’s still amazing
Revisado: 03-09-23
I love this book so much. I read it twice in high school and college and just revisited it now in my 30s in the audiobook format. I agree with the reviewers that the narration is a little mumbly at times, but it’s not bad enough to take away from the story. Every chapter was beautiful and enchanting and as good as I remembered, better. Compared to The Dispossessed, my other favorite, this book is more story and less treatise, which I enjoyed.

Not really an audiobook
Revisado: 10-12-22
This is not really an audiobook. It’s the splicing together of a couple of lectures along with a narrator/acolyte who comes in to frame things. It’s also very dated (a lot of Cold War stuff) and very Christian.

Until about 1800, the West and the Islamic realm were like two adjacent, parallel universes, each assuming itself to be the center of the world while ignoring the other. As Europeans colonized the globe, the two world histories intersected and the Western narrative drove the other one under. The West hardly noticed, but the Islamic world found the encounter profoundly disrupting.

Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

Unexplained android religion
Revisado: 02-10-22
I really respect this author and the world-building here is great. But most of the plot centers around truly bizarre religious beliefs held by the android main character. What??? Where is this coming from? Is it meant to be a religious parable? The beliefs seem to be completely internally invented by the character and not taught or socially reinforced, even by other androids, which weakens the potential commentary on religion. I couldn’t help thinking that she was just insane or defective, which made the plot frustrating because it felt like listening to the ramblings of an unhinged person: detached from reality but with such conviction that you can’t reach them. I found myself bored for long stretches, waiting for her to stop talking about her internal thing and describe what the other characters were doing. I stuck with it to the end and was not satisfied by the resolution.
