Stunning - interesting history, complex characters, ambiguity
Revisado: 06-13-24
This is the second book by Ms Sardar that I've read and both are excellent. This one includes complex characters and is set inan interesting period of history. It includes the ambiguity and shifting Nature of war, family, love, loyalty and truth.
The only thing I would fault is that the narrator's voice was difficult to heard when she was speaking quietly income key massages of dialog (hard to decipher overtraffic Android noise).

Historia
In August 1897, the young Belgian commandant Adrien de Gerlache set sail for a three-year expedition aboard the good ship Belgica with dreams of glory. His destination was the uncharted end of the earth: the icy continent of Antarctica. But de Gerlache’s plans to be first to the magnetic South Pole would swiftly go awry. After a series of costly setbacks, the commandant faced two bad options: turn back in defeat and spare his men the devastating Antarctic winter, or recklessly chase fame by sailing deeper into the freezing waters.

Lively account of a little known Antarctic voyage
Revisado: 01-23-23
I've read several books about early polar expeditions and am fascinated by the hardships overcome. This is a well-researched, well-written account of one of the little known early voyages and how the crew survived the ordeal.

Historia
In 2014, northeastern Syria might have been the last place you would expect to find a revolution centered on women's rights. But that year, an all-female militia faced off against ISIS in a little town few had ever heard of: Kobani. By then, the Islamic State had swept across vast swaths of the country, taking town after town and spreading terror as the civil war burned all around it. From that unlikely showdown in Kobani emerged a fighting force that would wage war against ISIS across northern Syria alongside the United States.

Although I felt this book wasn't as strong as her other two, the author has the ability to being recognition to what women are able to accomplish when the need arises.

Fascinating &Complex History of a Masterpiece
Revisado: 10-19-22
This book was particularly interesting to me because I had the incredible privilege to sing Benjamin Britten's War Requiem at the Sydney Opera House in an international music festival in 1993. Although the building fascinated me, I had no idea how complicated it's genesis was. While this book is quite long and there were many people involved in the project, I thought the author did a good job of making the saga comprehendable. He also captured Australian character and values in an entertaining manner. For me, this book was worth the time invested.

His mother’s act of mercy is a gross betrayal of everything Max stands for. He has dedicated his life to Nazism, fighting to atone for the shame of his anti-Hitler father’s imprisonment. It’s his duty to turn the sisters over to the Gestapo. But he hesitates, and the longer Max fails to do his duty, the harder it becomes.

Great story, brilliant writing, fine performance
Revisado: 09-28-22
I've read numerous WWII novels and this one was excellent. The story was fresh and showed the impact of war on civilians without falling into a good/evil dichotomy. Dialogue drove the story and was crisp, believable and full of character. The narration was very good. This book was definitely worth the time.

An excellent WWII resistance novel
Revisado: 08-10-22
I've read numerous novels of varying quality about World War II resistance movements and this is one of the best. It's richly flavored with the culture, geography, history and mythology of Crete. The characters are interesting and complex with just enough backstory to make them believable. Some are warped, some tempered by the adversity of war. There are complicated relationships, love, loss and ultimately triumph.
The narration was very good. Definitely a worthwhile book.

Historia
While hiking on a solo vacation in a remote, uninhabitable region of Arizona, Zachary Anderegg happened upon Riley, an emaciated puppy clinging to life, at the bottom of a 350-foot canyon. In a daring act of humanity that trumped the deliberate savagery behind Riley’s presence in such a place, Zak single-handedly orchestrated a rescue. What didn’t come out in the initial burst of publicity this story received is that Zak and Riley’s destinies were intertwined long before they improbably found each other.

Focused on the person rather than the dog
Revisado: 07-05-22
As someone fascinated with dogs and their relationship with humans, I had hoped this book would focus more on the dog/human bond. It seemed more focused on the person and his dysfunctional childhood. Not a bad book, just not what I was hoping for.
