Excellent writing and performance
Revisado: 10-06-21
What an incredible debut by Femi Fadugba and one of the best audiobook performances I’ve ever listened to. The storyline, the twists and turns even the maths kept me engaged from start to finish. I loved the contemporary references intertwined with the story - brilliantly written and definitely worthy of film or mini series adaptation!! Highly recommend!

Good Story - Awful accents
Revisado: 02-15-21
With the exception of Bibike and Ariyike, the performances were awful. Why does audible not simply have people with authentic accents read the story. It’s so distracting to have to listen to actors who cannot do a convincing Nigerian accent and are incapable of even pronouncing some Yoruba words. This is the second badly performed book by a Nigerian author I’ve listened to. I think going forward I will stick to Kindle rather than audiobooks.

In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency - a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil.

Most insightful of all presidential memoirs
Revisado: 12-21-20
Brilliantly written in a simple but completely engaging way. The stories behind the headlines and big political issues were fascinating. Absolutely loved listening to Barack Obama’s reading of A Promised Land. It reminded us of what an exceptional person he is and that is presidency, despite operating in the realm of American politics which is steeped in cynicism and focused on power at all cost, was as grounded and true to Obama’s personal integrity as was possible. Highly recommend this book,

Awful accent

This audio book does the novel a huge disservice- the accent of the narrator is just awful and unbearable to listen to. What a shame!

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 07-14-18
I loved the way this book started but then got irritated by the main characters and found it hard to empathize. While I understand the pain that he was going through, I found his behaviour inexcusable and wasn’t convinced that a character that had been so sensitive and thoughtful could suddenly turn on those who love him so easily.
As far as the performance was concerned I found it distracting when the male narrator spoke as the female character- it was off putting.
I expected more of an in-depth analysis of the marriage and its complexity but instead got a love triangle.

Historia
In December 2000, the Baltimore Sun ran a small piece about Wes Moore, a local student who had just received a Rhodes Scholarship. The same paper also ran a series of articles about four young men who had allegedly killed a police officer in a spectacularly botched armed robbery. The police were still hunting for two of the suspects who had gone on the lam, a pair of brothers. One was named Wes Moore.

Riveting and heartbreaking all at once
Revisado: 11-22-17
This book is both riveting and heartbreaking- as we root for one Wes Moore, we feel guilty that the other one could not have a different, happier ending.
I loved the writer Wes Moore’s story - the fact that despite their humble beginnings, his family aspired to so much and like so many struggling families, sacrificed so much to give their children a better chance. It’s so heartwarming to see that they never gave up despite the challenges, that his mother, grandparents and family friends’ contributions to his upbringing epitomized the expression “it takes a village”. At the same time it’s hard not to despair about the other Wes Moore not being part of that type of village, not having the type of support network that could have led to a different ending for him. Excellent book! Made me want to read more from this, formidable Wes Moore!

Historia
A biting satire about a young man's isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty's The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality: the black Chinese restaurant.

Not my cup of tea. Felt like navel-gazing on the part of the author!! Satire overload! The message was lost after the 10th use of the N word!

Historia
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

So poignant, so real - I found myself answering back as I listened. This beautiful work sadly becomes more relevant each day as black lives are taken with impunity.
