Historia
In the fair autumn of Our Lord's grace 1431, the nuns of England's St. Frideswide's prepare for the simply ceremonies in which the saintly novice Thomasine will take her holy vows. But their quiet lives of beauty and prayer are thrown into chaos by the merciless arrival of Lady Ermentrude Fenner and her retinue of lusty men, sinful women, and baying hounds. The hard-drinking dowager even keeps a pet monkey for her amusement. She demands wine, a feast.... And her niece, the angelic Thomasine.

An interesting glimpse into the author's view of medieval life. It is difficult to know how accurate the representation of the nuns experience is. Certainly, the tale is well told, and the plot line is well executed.

Very engaging
Revisado: 11-18-24
The characters are ina sense too good to be trur. However, sometimes one wants to escape into a world of decent people with less political, personal, and societal strife. The engaging part of these books is that they are about a time of considerable change in the world at least within India. Rather than focusing on the stressors, The author has presented us with the individual world, some of which are what we hope they may be as opposed to what they may in fact have been. I thank her for writing such a book that has an educational component about what life may have been like, but also what one hopes it may have been.

Historia
The term "sleeping dictionary" was coined for young Indian women who slept with British men and educated them in the ways of India. Set between 1925 and the end of World War II, The Sleeping Dictionary is the story of Kamala, born to a peasant family in West Bengal, who makes her way to Calcutta of the 1930s. Haunted by a forbidden love, she is caught between the raging independence movement and the British colonial society she finds herself inhabiting.

Great history; tediousheroine
Revisado: 10-27-24
Excellent reader. The primary character, a.k.a., the heroine, seemed quite hard to and inconsistently in capable of understanding her circumstances throughout most of the book. It made for interesting plot developments, but was rather irritating. There is no question that the author is a superb writer and the story is engrossing because of her writing abilities. The book is worth logging through, but somethings may make the reader rather frustrated.

Superb performance and a good tale
Revisado: 09-27-24
The story drags in parts, with a set of twists and too few connections to the subplots. Also the children are tedious and portrayed as irritatingly selfish, making them somewhat unrealistic as being groomed to rule.

Superb renditions of human souls from other eras
Revisado: 08-19-24
The somewhat artificial interconnections of the families over the millennia are a bit difficult to accept. However, it makes an entertaining and captivating storyline. I would have preferred to see more or I should say here more of the earlier centuries and those families. The majority of developments are, recounted for the belly book through World War II. Those are extremely well done and they alone make the book worthwhile.

Rather an excess of vile
Revisado: 07-27-24
The reader was superb as always in this series. The plot was good, and if you read the book or listen to it, do not miss the authors notes at the end. They are ironically somewhat more interesting than the story per se. I did not give it as I normally would for his books, a full five star value because the unending bloody beatings and stress were not fully believable. I do not swarm away from violence in books like this; I expect there will be and it's likely part of the reality. However, the level of the violence is not believable in that the heroes then get right back up and continue onward. Normal human bodies don't work that way, even on adrenaline. it was also a little too much of superpower level skill tossed in throughout the book, with a side of self righteousness.

Similar blots on Bertie's horizon come in the shape of Major Plank, the African explorer, Vanessa Cook, proud beauty and "molder of men," and Orlo Porter who seems to have nothing else to do but think of sundering Bertie's head from his body.

A wonderful series of one line quips.
Revisado: 02-03-24
The plot was heavily convoluted and a bit tedious. However, there are wonderful one liners throughout. The performance is superb. I do wish we had people who were such clever riders these days who can manage to be foppish with an undertone of absolute truths.
I do not believe based on my experience that this is the very best of the Wodehouse Wooster tales but a charming frolic certainly.

But the boy is a fighter and after being evicted from the workhouse for asking for 'more' and surviving a stint as an undertaker’s assistant, he walks many miles to London and finds a whole new life with a gang of young pickpockets led by the Artful Dodger and their guardian Fagin.

A good shot cut and maybe better
Revisado: 01-19-24
Since Dickens paid by the word, his novels can be tedious and exceedingly long. This is a pleasure to hear, and has been wonderfully acted. While not completely faithful to the original, it certainly hits all the major points in this compressed version. The performance is superb. Every single character isbeautifully portrayed. It's a great listen. But if you have to write an original book report, some of the corners that are cut will catch you out. Beware!

Historia
Two words: the bullet. That's all it takes to shatter her life. Caroline Cashion is beautiful, intelligent, a professor of French literature. But in a split second, everything she's known is proved to be a lie. A single bullet, gracefully tapered at one end, is found lodged at the base of her skull. Caroline is stunned. It makes no sense: She has never been shot. She has no entry wound, no scar. Then, over the course of one awful evening, she learns the truth.

Unbelievable. Stupid. Unbelievably stupid.
Revisado: 10-16-23
The performance is Excellent. Unfortunately, the plot line is not. The writing is very well done and engrossing. It is only because of that I was able to pursue the entire book. I kept hoping after the first half that there would be some plot twist, which makes sense. In the latter half of the book, the plot goes well off the rails, and the heroine ostensibly starts making terribly foolish choices. Without giving away the entire plot, the solution becomes quite evident to anyone who is listening or reading except to the main character. It is unquestionably a book in which the quality of the writing far exceeds the plot line. Regrettably, the plot is so ultimately stupid and unsatisfying that I cannot recommend listening or reading the book.
