Jaws is the classic blockbuster thriller that inspired the three-time Academy Award-winning Steven Spielberg movie and made millions of beachgoers afraid to go into the water. Experience the thrill of helpless horror again—or for the first time!

A very slow burn
Revisado: 05-17-21
Jaws is a solid book but it’s not the action packed shark hunt you might expect. A small beach community is hit with a vengeful shark who starts picking off residents one by one, and it plays like an aquatic detective story. There’s a lot of other storylines interspersed around the shark hunt, those can be at times a bit tedious, but the core of the novel still revolves around the cat and mouse game, between shark and man. I prefer books by Michael Crichton or other authors who take these concepts and make them more lively. But Jaws is still a classic and even at times when it felt boring, the payoff still came. Enjoy!

Revisado: 05-16-21
The Graduate is an amazing book. Although the movie is so iconic, I think the book tops the cinematic masterpiece. All the same plot points are hit on, the affair with an older somewhat manipulative women, trying to figure out life after college, which he never really does and finally finding the person that’s right for you, even when others stand in the way. This book has a somber tone of uncertainty, not really knowing what to do with your life. It’s very relatable and well written. Enjoy!

Sad but beautiful
Revisado: 05-16-21
The Descendants is an amazing book. Very similar to the movie but if you’ve seen that this book is still a wonderful journey to go on. Love, loss and betrayal in paradise. A story of a family doing the best they can as they prepare to lose their wife/mom. It’s a meditation on grief and forgiveness that remains funny and fun. Aloha!

Historia
In this deeply scary and intensely unnerving debut novel, Jake and a woman known only as "The Girlfriend" are on a drive to visit his parents at their secluded farm. But when Jake leaves "The Girlfriend" stranded at an abandoned high school, what follows is a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease, an exploration into psychological frailty, and an ending as suspenseful as The Usual Suspects and as haunting as Misery.

Confusing but great
Revisado: 05-15-21
I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a great book, especially for it’s length, it just flies by. The book chronicles a new couple going to see the boyfriends parents in the midst of a snowstorm. The girlfriend is pensive and considering calling it quits, hence the title, but a strange journey takes over as they meet the whacky parents of the boyfriend. Without giving anything away, the ending is a bit muddled. It doesn’t ruin the book but there’s no clear resolution to the plot. I don’t think that makes it a bad book. Also it’s so much better than the movie, which I found tedious and pretentious. A compact joy. Have fun

Historia
Perhaps Frank and April Wheeler married too young and started a family too early. Maybe Frank's job is dull. And April never saw herself as a housewife. Yet they have always lived on the assumption that greatness is only just around the corner. But now that certainty is about to unravel. With heartbreaking compassion and remorseless clarity, Richard Yates shows how Frank and April mortgage their spiritual birthright, betraying not only each other, but their best selves.

Good but depressing
Revisado: 05-14-21
Revolutionary Road is a classic by any standard. The story of an unraveling couple way back when. It’s very well written, that goes without saying, it just depends on what you’re looking for. I found myself rather downcast by the end, but maybe that’s the point. Who knows.... enjoy!

Historia
Tom Perrotta's thirtysomething parents of young children are a varied and surprising bunch. There's Todd, the handsome stay-at-home dad dubbed "The Prom King" by the moms of the playground; Sarah, a lapsed feminist with a bisexual past, who seems to have stumbled into a traditional marriage; Richard, Sarah's husband, who has found himself more and more involved with a fantasy life on the Internet than with the flesh and blood in his own house; and Mary Ann, who thinks she has it all figured out.

Little Children is a solid book. It blends suburban banality with twisted undertones within the community. An affair blossoms over the backdrop of a child molester moving into town. It can be dark but is always well written. Enjoy!

In the opening scene of Falling Man, Keith Neudecker emerges from the smoke and ash of the burning tower where he worked, and makes his way to the apartment of his ex-wife and young son uptown. Throughout this bold and haunting novel, DeLillo traces the way the events of September 11 kindled or rekindled relationships, reconfigured our emotional landscape, our memory, and our perception of the world.

Historia
Pammy and Lyle Wynant are an attractive, modern couple who seem to have it all. Yet behind their "ideal" life is a lingering boredom and quiet desperation: Their talk is mostly chatter, their sex life more a matter of obligatory "satisfaction" than pleasure. Then Lyle sees a man killed on the floor of the Stock Exchange and becomes involved with the terrorists responsible; Pammy leaves for Maine with a homosexual couple...and still they remain untouched, "players" indifferent to the violence that surrounds them and that they have helped to create.

Better than the movie
Revisado: 05-05-21
Up in the Air is a great book. It’s airtight writing that tells the story of a detached man flying across the country for work.
To people who have seen the movie first.... the book is a lot different. The movie brought in themes from the 2008 financial crisis and his job of laying people off has an added relevance. The book also doesn’t have the Anna Kendrick character, his protege for termination.
Overall, I prefer the book because it’s more nuanced and although the movie is good it has a message to it that the book doesn’t.
I prefer the simplicity of the book over the semi message driven movie.
Enjoy
