Not the best Michael Shermer book

I've been a fan of Michael Shermer for a while now, but he needs to come up with some new ideas. A lot of this book was just re-packaged information from his other books. Also, for someone who advocates being "unbiased" in your assessments, he is certainly letting his bias show in this performance.

First of all, this is a very good audiobook with some great information and techniques in it. I highly recommend it.

Yes, the audio isn't perfect. There are a few minor issues that, IMO, do not detract from the experience. This isn't the smooth, polished recording you would expect from a Scott Brick or Simon Vance performance, but the author's reading and production quality is completely adequate. The author does speak slowly, so I turned the playback speed up to x1.25, and it sounds just fine. The author does say "New Heading" throughout the book, but if you just tell yourself "OK, this is how he tells us a new topic is coming up", it isn't bothersome at all.

Yes, the author does occasionally reference "spirituality", but it is not "religious". However, if you get sad because other people in the world have a different belief system than you, you should probably stay away from this book. Whether the author gets his inspiration from his faith, the educational system, or a goat that lives under a bridge, it shouldn't matter. The information is good. The book isn't religious or "preachy" at all as some other reviewers have stated.

A three hour sales pitch, with some occasional good information

This audiobook did have occasional pieces of good information that would be helpful to someone interested in publishing a book, but a lot of that information is geared towards selling you on the idea of hiring the author’s company to do the heavy lifting for you.

The narrator also left something to be desired. Occasional slurred words (could have just been poor editing around sentences) and mispronunciations don’t bode well for someone trying to sell you on the idea of entrusting the author with your ideas.

If you are a fan of David Spade, this is a great listen. David Spade delivers stories about David Spade in classic David Spade style. David Spade. The book contains some great Chris Farley stories, some interesting “Hollywood” stories. And more than a few stories about his experiences with “Chuckle Hut” gigs. David also gives a detailed account of the whole “Eddie Murphy” incident. It’s clear David respects Eddie, and I’m glad they are cool now, but it doesn’t change my mind that Eddie Murphy is a spoiled baby who doesn’t like to be made fun of. I wonder if Eddie got as mad at Tim Meadows over the “Community Service” sketch. Whatever.

Anyway, good book. Give it a listen.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Audiolibro Por L. Frank Baum arte de portada

Would you consider the audio edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to be better than the print version?

Absolutely. Anne Hathaway does a tremendous job of bringing DOZENS of characters to life.

What does Anne Hathaway bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Hathaway gives every character a unique voice, tone, and timbre. A tall order when there are so many different characters to be voiced. One can even forgive her choice of "Valley Girl" as a voice for one of the minor characters.

Any additional comments?

This is the original story, not a script for the movie we've all seen. It is interesting to experience all the little differences between the original material, and the choices Hollywood made when making the movie. While they are obviously the same story, and share the same major plot points, the original book is VERY different than the movie. For instance, in the movie, the Tinman's backstory is given in a few short lines of dialogue. In the book, his backstory is almost a short story unto itself.

Definitely a recommended listen!

If you could sum up One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in three words, what would they be?

Avoid Being Insane.. or... Fight The Power

Which scene was your favorite?

Every scene where McMurphy battles Nurse Ratched. Sometimes he wins, sometimes he doesn't

Who was the most memorable character of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and why?

McMurphy

Any additional comments?

I was a little apprehensive at first when I saw that the book was narrated by John C Reilly. While I enjoy him as a comedian, I wasn't sure if he would be able to pull off the performance necessary to narrate this story. I was completely wrong. After listing to this audiobook, I can't imagine it being read by anyone else. Fantastic performance.

As for the book itself... I first saw the movie years ago, and at least a few times since. So, I had some preconceived notions as to what to expect. While the movie was great (as was Nicholson's portrayal of McMurphy), the book adds another layer of depth to the story. Definitely worth a listen.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Sissy Spacek?

Probably not. She does not differentiate between characters all that well, and her delivery, while not quite monotonous, doesn't reflect the emotions in the story. Passages where a character might be scared, or sad, or happy, or excited, are all read in the same way.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

Recently, I've been listening to books with "celebrity" narrators. Anne Hathaway reading "Wizard of Oz"? Amazing; John C Reilly narrating "Cuckoo's Nest"? Even better than I expected; "Huck Finn" read by Elijah Wood? Awesome.. After being spoiled by those readings, maybe I expected too much from Sissy Spacek. The best I can say about the performance? "I've heard worse..."
