Bishop Budde is clearly an intelligent, well-read person with a caring sensitive nature. I read her book with interest, looking for something unique to take in and apply.
I was drawn to read this book after watching Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde at the National Prayer Service over the weekend of President Trump’s inauguration. I reasoned that Bishop Budde needed to be either quite brave or totally tone-deaf to the moment in order to proceed as she did. If the former, I was interested to learn her perspective.
My expectation was that Bishop Budde would speak as a voice of Jesus and seek to bring people together, emphasizing the common principles and values that every reader could accept and build upon. Having finished this book, it is clear Mariann Budde struggles in this book with advocating for Christian views when they bump up against loud and persistent secular voices. In my opinion, it took no bravery for Bishop Budde to stand up in the Washington National Cathedral and rebuke the new President. In her role as Bishop, I would have expected her to act in a way akin to Luke 6:32-36, where Christ says: “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.” and “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” I believe Bishop Budde would have demonstrate far more bravery by standing up to the secular voices in her Congregation. Mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2:12).

Historia
Preble Jefferson can see five seconds into the future. Otherwise, he lives an ordinary life. But when a confrontation with a cop on a New York City subway goes tragically wrong, those seconds give Preble the chance to dodge a bullet, causing another man to die in his place. Government agencies become aware of Preble's gift, a manhunt ensues, and their ambitions shift from law enforcement to military R&D. Preble will do whatever it takes to protect his family, but as events spiral out of control, he must weigh the cost of his gift against the loss of his humanity.

Boring
Revisado: 01-05-25
A better name for this book would be “The Man Who Continually Made Bad Decisions and Never Learned From Them.” I thought the book would get interesting; I keep expecting something to reward me for reading on. I read to the last word. I was disappointed; with a little imagination, Preble Jefferson’s character could have been interesting. So much potential with this story line, but to no avail.

Not What I Expected
Revisado: 11-13-24
I listened to this book with interest. In the end, I came away with the sense it was more a diatribe about Trump rushed out to hit the market before the election. Disappointed because I grew up thinking of Bob Woodward as reporting on both sides of an issue. His commentary in this book was one-sided.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

A sobering story
Revisado: 08-09-24
This book is hard to read because of the consequences profiled. The author’s thoroughness was appreciated because anything less would have made a mockery of such a serious event. Reading this book has alerted my senses and introduced me to events I never considered. This book sheds light on how close we are to an armageddon event.

Historia
Spanning the years of transition, 1944 to 1948, Ascent to Power illuminates Truman’s struggles to emerge as president in his own right. Yet, from a relatively unknown Missouri senator to the most powerful man on Earth, Truman’s legacy transcends. With his come-from-behind campaign in the fall of 1948, his courageous civil rights advocacy, and his role in liberating millions from militarist governments and brutal occupations, Truman’s decisions during these pivotal years changed the course of the world in ways so significant we live with them today.

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Insightful and Interesting
Revisado: 11-28-23
In many regards, this book reads more like a diary than written prose. This writing style does not detract from the insightful or interesting content. Though, in the final analysis, while I can marvel at what Musk has accomplished and his drive and determination, I am left wanting to know more about this complex genius.

A friend recommended this book, and for that reason I stayed with it to the end. I kept waiting for something that warranted the praise. It never came. This could have been a short story had the trivia been deleted. There are much better reads out there.

Historia
Hear British scientist Richard Dawkins and geneticist Francis Collins on this edition of Fresh Air. Richard Dawkins is a professor of the public understanding of science at Oxford University. The New York Times has hailed him as a writer who "understands the issues so clearly that he forces his reader to understand them too". In his latest book, he writes about what he sees as the irrationality of a belief in God and sets down his arguments for atheism.
