Historia
Horrified by the thought of breaking off his life-long love-affair with running, Richard Askwith began to think seriously about a question with profound implications for every enthusiastic runner: how can you keep running, happily and well, for the rest of your life—ideally, well into your nineties and beyond? Askwith's quest for the secrets of running longevity takes him on a long, mystifying journey: to laboratories and running tracks, cities and remote mountain villages, on several continents.

An audiobook that was both encouraging and depressing to me as a master’s runner. Very detailed and thorough.

Life in the G League is far from glamorous. Players make enormous sacrifices and work unimaginable hours in the hope that someone in the NBA will give them a chance. To this day, very few fans—even the most passionate followers of the NBA—know much about the G League. In the fall of 2021, the Birmingham Squadron granted author Alex Squadron complete access to the team to capture the experience of playing in the league.

I had always heard about “The Raven”, but never knew the details about him or his apparent obsession with running. The author brings us inside of very aspect of the man in this compelling and entertaining book. I’m a runner but you don’t have to be to enjoy this book.

Historia
Can’t Hurt Me, David Goggins’ smash hit memoir, demonstrated how much untapped ability we all have but was merely an introduction to the power of the mind. In Never Finished, Goggins takes you inside his Mental Lab, where he developed the philosophy, psychology, and strategies that enabled him to learn that what he thought was his limit was only his beginning and that the quest for greatness is unending.

What can you say about David Goggins that hasn’t already been said? He’s a mountain of a man who has overcome seemingly insurmountable odds to get to the life that he enjoys today; except he doesn’t simply enjoy it and reap the benefits of his success. Instead, he is (as the title suggests) never finished in his quest to find out what he is capable of as a human being. This book was so inspiring. I especially like the “podcast-type” format that they use at the end of each chapter. It adds so much to the story. This is one of those books that I will return to many times in the future.

Great Beginning
Revisado: 02-14-24
The first part of the book mostly addressed the mental side of running and it was excellent. I wish the author had stuck to this subject and expanded it into a complete book on the subject. It was that good. The rest of the book wasn’t nearly as good. The author smugly offers his opinions about training and racing, largely in a way of absolute and unquestioned authority, complete with cherry-picked studies to support his views. It got tedious and tiresome. I never made it to the end of this one.

Historia
In the dusty hills above San Diego, Bob Larsen became America's greatest running coach. Starting with a ragtag group of high school cross country and track runners, Larsen set out on a decades-long quest to find the secret of running impossibly fast, for longer distances than anyone thought possible. Running to the Edge is a riveting account of Larsen's journey, and his quest to discover the unorthodox training secrets that would lead American runners (elite and recreational) to breakthroughs never imagined.

This is one of the best running audiobooks that I’ve heard. Perhaps the best one. The author perfectly tells the story of American distance running through the lens of running coach, Bob Larsen, while also weaving in his own personal running history. It all works in a seamless and entertaining way. So good!

A Long Sermon
Revisado: 02-17-23
I must be missing something with this author, as others have rave reviews. I tried. I really did. But he comes across as preachy. I struggled to get through this book, and frankly didn’t finish it. I’m sure he’s an intelligent man who has helped many people. He’s just not for me.

Historia
To master anything, one must first master themselves–one’s emotions, one’s thoughts, one’s actions. Eisenhower famously said that freedom is really the opportunity to practice self-discipline. Cicero called the virtue of temperance the polish of life. Without boundaries and restraint, we risk not only failing to meet our full potential and jeopardizing what we have achieved, but we ensure misery and shame. In a world of temptation and excess, this ancient idea is more urgent than ever.

Ryan Holiday is far from being like the Stoics that he always talks about. He’s preachy and self righteous. This book is just more of that. I think he’s a decent writer, but things go sideways when he does the audio on his own books.

Dr Youn has the perfect balance of humor, honesty and self deprication in this book. He’s not afraid to be real and vulnerable, being equally honest about his struggles and shortcomings as he is the victories. The narration is spot on. This audiobook is very well done.

This revolutionary training method has been embraced by elite runners - with extraordinary results - and now you can do it, too. Respected running and fitness expert Matt Fitzgerald explains how the 80/20 running program - in which you do 80 percent of runs at a lower intensity and just 20 percent at a higher intensity - is the best change runners of all abilities can make to improve their performance.

Revisado: 06-26-21
My favorite running books are anything by George Sheehan. My next favorite running books are anything by Matt Fitzgerald. I always enjoy this author’s work and this one did not disappoint. Matt is a gifted storyteller who manages to take a “deep dive” into the science behind the 80/20 running principle and still somehow keep it interesting. For me, I’ve already had personal success with the 80/20 type of training and therefore didn’t need to know the science behind it to know that it works. But for anyone who does, this is the book for you.
