Unique storyline and characters, in that all of the characters are clearly different, and it is easy to hear that in the recording whether the narrator forgets to modulate their voices properly or not. This does happen a few times. It sounded confusing when I wasn't following along in the book. Fantastic read and mysterious until the end, as well as humorous and unapologetically Black and female.

Inspiring story and definitely uplifting in a time that I feel alone. But, as a person with an unsuccessful social history (social anxiety, minimal social skills bc I have 1 autistic parent and 1 parent with agoraphobia, plus I had undiagnosed spina bifida and impulsivity executive functioning developmental delay) based on things that are out of my control, she runs away too much especially if this is all she ever wanted. Also, stop beliegering the point of how terribly lonely her life is; we got that part the first 3 times. After they divulged the full story. It is cute, and I love the love story. But with 1 Satuday a month, if I'm lucky 2, to devote to marathon reading, I wish I picked a different story. Plus, it's really short, not that this storyline needs to be long because it doesn't. But I like long stories that I forced be to return to.

Unique Story Slow Start

It felt sluggish in the beginning, like the starting premise is that some individual adults who are loners/lonely and are social misfits or have been socially displaced. So, their backstories are laid out for like the first whole half of the story. And while the story becomes unique, sophisticated, and interesting by the middle of the middle, you still have to slug through the first at least 5 chapters of sad-ish characters to get to the positivity or the action. I think what really ruins it is the monotone narrator because there are many characters in each scene yet the narrators weren't able to or simply didn't provide enough variations in each character voices to know who was actually speaking. Then, the variation often was forgotten until mid-sentence or wasn't used at all in an entire chapter.

I feel like the storyline is authentic. I'm sitting in my room alone ducking my head in embarrassment at the quirky things that I couldn't get right at camp. And I am therapeutically laughing off the old shame.
I'm definitely Mookie, except I wasn't a reporter. I just sounded like one because I qouted and paraphrased factual info, but I was actually a "normal kid," except I wasn't a winner like Mookie's mom. I'm a runt with stretchy joints, and limited coordination. WHICH IS WHY, this podcast brings memories flooding back to me good, great, and mostly, awkward. However, overnight camp was the best because it's where I learned to laugh back in the people's faces, who were being vapid and exclusive. For which eventually evolved into the ability laugh in the face of acsociety that would do the same.
I love stories that can conjure authentic nostalgia.

It was entertaining straight from the beginning. I don't want to give away anything in the review, so I will try not to. It is humorously quirky with a juvenile version of dark humor that adults find witty. I think his, this story is a "listen together story" because you are going to want to share it with friends and family because it's that good. So, why not gather the family and listen to a story around the old Victrola (mp3 player, kindle, Bluetooth speaker, etc). Great way to strengthen imagination skills, listening comprehension. Characters are very well developed with likeable personalities. I wish just I would have found this story later in the series because I can't stand waiting for 2nd books to come out. When a series starts out really good, I need to hit the ground running.

Great life lessons and so much to relate to. Seeking freedom and independence from parents is hard enough without adding illness. The girl in this story is 18, but I'm 35 and can relate 100% to the illness and coming of age conundrum, right now. The performance and recording was done like a radio program. You definitely don't need a book to follow along. And this is a nonstop read, I couldn't stop listening.

I love how the narrator talks like Brene. I felt as though Brene was reading the book. What I actually like about this book is the very reason why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. I know that seems weird; I'll explain. It isn't self-help, but it isn't enlightenment either it is somewhere in between. What this book really does is helps you understand or identify problems, then gives some ideas and strategies that you can use to start finding more specific self-help work or seeking professional or community help.

Over the summer, I started a self-compassion crusade for myself, as a part of my depression recovery treatment for complex trauma from a progressive disabling illness, immediate job loss, a previous string of layoffs, and a childhood of school bullying. In my program we started with the teachings of Kristen Neff the self-compassion break and journal, but we didn't get a chance to dive into the phrasing (the "WAY" that I need to speak to myself). Speaking kindly to myself on a consistent basis is the hardest part of all because I was used to pushing to hard and sometimes shouting at myself in my head. But, in this book she provides you with such a wide variety of applications and strategies that I feel, well prepared for the rough spots that I may face.

I chose this book because I live for baseball and I happened to read romance novels. However, I only read historically set romance novels. But, when I listened to the sample the baseball lingo was enough to pull me in. But, honestly in terms of a storyline there was hardly any struggle whatsoever and honestly they said the model's face healed back up to what it was. So like, uummm what!!!?
Next, terrible flaw has many parts to make my point. First, the main character is a ball player from Baltimore, MD. MLB players form the Mid-Atlantic states are known for having strong local ties to home. There's almost always a home friend or hometown/whole town presence. Yet, all of his friends are superstar athletes from other sports and film and their wives have powerful relevant jobs and could also be runway models. Nobody from his childhood or anything.
The story was too long a lot of the chapters about dating were excessive and much of the time was spent bragging about how much better the girl is than other people.
I did LIKE how well they described interactions with fans and people's rights to privacy, etc. And I loved their perspectives on date rape and showing solidarity among women.

Nice variety of rearranged bedtime stories. Some better than others, in the sense that they were easier to follow. All sounded great. Each one was really imaginative. Darkly funny or cynically funny as the title suggests. Not light hearted laughter, you must enjoy moderately dark humor.
