Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Sometimes a slog but worth it
Revisado: 03-08-24
There are times in this book that just seem tedious and others that are heart soaring. The point, by the end, is that is like life. As the author says, “The stars are beautiful because of the space between them”.
Also the reader is one of the best I’ve heard, at least with men’s voices.

A good and thoughtful tale
Revisado: 11-19-23
This is a good story but also goes more into how complicated souls are. It is more widely applicable than the usual fantasy.

Historia
Lois Clary is a software engineer at General Dexterity, a San Francisco robotics company with world-changing ambitions. She codes all day and collapses at night, her human contact limited to the two brothers who run the neighborhood hole-in-the-wall from which she orders dinner every evening. Then, disaster! Visa issues. The brothers quickly close up shop. But they have one last delivery for Lois: their culture, the sourdough starter used to bake their bread. She must keep it alive, they tell her—feed it daily, play it music, and learn to bake with it.

A very enjoyable story
Revisado: 10-27-23
This is a delightful story. A young woman slowly discovers there is magic all around her in the most mundane things. I loved the “Lois club”. What a great way to meet other people completely different from yourself but still having something in common.
Some reviews say nothing happens. LOTS happens, however there are no guns, drugs, affairs or dragons. Sheesh 🙄

Historia
Ever wonder what happened to the Isekai’d gamer who found himself incarnated into the overweight body of a LitRPG farmer, only to spit in the face of destiny and earn more money and experience than anyone ever dreamed possible? Fairytales would have you believe he lived happily ever after, but life doesn’t always match up to fairytale endings. Accidentally murdered by a cleric in another universe during a botched resurrection, Arnold, a semi-pro gamer turned clerical error, has now become a thorn in the vindictive Northern Regent’s side.

This was an entertaining story and also a stealth philosophy course in how to find meaning and purpose to life. Never heavy handed though.

Historia
In 2016, Rob Delaney’s one-year-old son, Henry, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The family had moved from Los Angeles to London with their two young boys when Rob’s wife was pregnant with Henry, their third. The move was an adventure that would bind them even more tightly together as they navigated the novelty of London, the culture clashes, and the funhouse experience of Rob’s fame—thanks to his role as co-creator and co-star of the hit series Catastrophe. Henry’s illness was a cataclysm that changed everything about their lives.

Gives language to the inexpressible
Revisado: 12-08-22
This book is an amazing to hear. For some, like myself, who are generally inarticulate when it comes to grief, it can give you the words you need.
The author cusses a lot and is not Christian. I found that somewhat distracting but it is irrelevant to what he is saying. Deep grief needs some expletives and the author’s theology is pretty simple.

Not as good as Quarter Share
Revisado: 05-31-22
But not a waste of fun time. I was worried about it being a “harem” fantasy from reading the other reviews. It’s not. The 18 year old main character thinks four of the women he works with are very hot but NONE of the shipmates are willing to mess with their particular ship’s culture and sleep with a fellow shipmate. Much angst but it is addressed. This story, like Quarter Share ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.
Also, IMO, a deep gravelly voice was not the best choice for an 18 year old, slender young man. But there are worse narrators.

Excellent story

The story is great, thoughtful and nuanced. The narrator is average. She seemed sometimes to mix up the characters but when not trying to do different voices, hers is pleasant.

Historia
Ever have one of those days where life just plain sucks? Welcome to my last three months - ever since I caught my can’t-be-soon-enough-ex-husband cheating with his paralegal. I’m 35 years old, and I’ve lost my NYC apartment, my job, my money, and frankly, my dignity. But the final heartache in the suck sandwich of my life? My great-aunt Maggie died. The only family member who’s ever gotten me. Even after death, though, she’s helping me get back up again. Too bad that bravado only lasts as long as it takes to drive into Huckleberry Hills. And see the house.

Finally had to give up
Revisado: 08-01-21
Other reviewers called it “chick-lite”That’s what I was in the mood for. But chick-lite is not supposed to mean chick-stupid. Yes, you can be abused and dumb about who you fall in love with the first time. BUT how many times does new Mr Nice have to show himself to be thoughtful and compassionate before you assume the worst if he mows your lawn?
There were other problems but I want to go wash out my ears now. Something with a fallible but honest and intelligent woman who can learn from her mistakes.

Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Historia
After her apprenticeship was done and a place in the guild of villains secured, Tori's life was supposed to get simpler. Unfortunately, a poorly timed errand sees Tori caught in the debut of a new team of capes, one wearing an all-too-familiar name. Thrust into the spotlight, Tori will have to navigate her unwanted fame as well as the suspiciously superheroic new neighbors down the hall, all while keeping up with her own villainous enterprises. With the guild no longer a secret, Hephaestus needs to grow as strong as possible to face her mounting threats.

The evil in the shadows is insane
Revisado: 07-20-21
This book is an enjoyable sequel. There is character growth, LOTS of backstory and plenty of setups for book three in the series.
The complaints about the “niceness” of the villains is unjustified. It was explained in Forging Hephaestus that the leaders of the guild had witnessed in alternate universes what unchecked crime leads to. They made “the code” in order not to live in a universe like that. That’s reasonable.
What I didn’t care for was at the end of the very long epilogue (tying up lose ends and setting up for the sequel) Nexus seems to change the previous rules about the role of Lodestar. Maybe that will be clarified by Drew Hayes in the next book.
