Full disclaimer: I’m a previous client of coach Drees. That said, I’d like to believe that doesn’t have any bearing on my review.

Drees has a unique coaching style, which finds its roots in cognitive behavioral therapy, the emotional freedom technique (tapping), and even a bit of quantum physics.

Reading this book brought me right back to our old coaching sessions. It’s a great encapsulation of Drees’ teachings and methodologies. What I like most about those teachings — as well as this book — is that they’re relatively unique for the self-help space.

Drees assists clients and readers in overcoming roadblocks by changing their frames, mindsets, and beliefs. He regularly returns to the notion of “misalignment” — the idea that if we’re not properly attuned to our desires, it will be hard for us to attain them because we won’t be the required versions of ourselves.

Throughout the book, as well as his coaching sessions, he stresses the importance of finding such alignment and discovering empowering perspectives to surmount difficulties in new, more seamless fashions. And those subjects are essential indeed, as you’ll likely learn when you read this one.

I’ve got to say, this was the best book I’ve read in the climate change space so far; it’s the first one that didn’t make me feel completely awful and hopeless.

To no one’s surprise, Gates is articulate, tactical, and wise in his delivery here. Rather than approaching the problem by shouting messages of gloom and doom, he says, “Yes, this is serious, but there are solutions as well. Here’s what they are. Now, we need to get busy.” I just loved that perspective.

Sure, there are probably other books in the genre that dive deeper into specific parts of climate change or get more technical overall. I’m sure those reads would be beneficial for some, but this book seems like the most appropriate and helpful thing for the rest of us.

If you want to get a good and non-political take on the problem, you’ve got to read this one. Yes, it’s a little scary at times (we’re talking about the future of our planet, after all), but it’s still incredible, informative, and optimistic.

Great book on mindfulness and habits

I’m a big fan of mindfulness and meditation. That’s what drew me to this one. And while those things were definitely front and center here, there were several other really interesting conversation points that more than covered the cost of admission.

I found the author’s discussions on reward loops / motivation especially interesting. He even takes the idea of “trigger, behavior, reward” and applies it to social media use, uncovering some wildly interesting and stunning conclusions about our cravings for “likes” and social validation.

In the end, this important book teaches us to look at our behaviors and ask ourselves, “What habits am I currently running?” or, “What what ‘levers’ am I pressing to get a reward?” These questions help us become more mindful of our behaviors and change patterns that don’t serve us.

If you’re looking to level up in the mental health realm, definitely give this one a read. It’s got all sorts of good stuff in it — not just the things I referenced here.

I picked this book up after finishing one of Headlee’s other titles (“Do Nothing”). I just loved her writing style and down-to-earth approach. I’m glad I opted for this one as well, as it provided me with another great reading experience and more of Headlee’s keen wisdom.

The message of this one is clear and impactful: we’ve lost our ability to effectively communicate with one another, and that loss is taking a serious toll on our relationships and overall well-being. As Headlee points out, few of us actually talk “with” one another anymore — we simply talk “at” each other, then wait for our next chance to respond.

Technology isn’t helping this trend either — with the rise of the internet, it seems our attention spans have only gotten shorter, which has contributed further to our already faltering ability to effectively communicate with one another.

As the book nears its end, Headlee reminds us of a few key conversation insights. Namely: listening takes work, we all crave to be understood, and a happy life is social rather than solitary. As we put more focus on our conversational skills as a result of this book, maybe we’ll take those lessons to heart and improve several categories of our lives at once.

It’s another really great read that fans of the author and newcomers alike will enjoy.

I find evolutionary psychology fascinating, which is one of the main reasons I picked up this book. The other is that I listened to its author on the “Huberman Lab” podcast and found his arguments really intriguing.

I’m very glad I purchased this one, as I found it to be one of the more comprehensive, interesting, and logical treatises on evolution-based mating preferences I've ever come across. Its arguments all make a great deal of sense, even if you wouldn’t necessarily draw such conclusions simply by observing animals in nature.

I think that reading this title gives men and women alike a solid playbook for understanding each other and what their evolutionary (often subconscious) desires are. Of course, there are certainly lots of nuances in mating, but the author does a good job of pointing out such things and mentioning that no piece of advice is going to work 100% of the time.

There are countless great examples and references cited in this one as well. My favorite example came from a particular species of fly; the author explained how males of this species have a very “unique” way of protecting their mates from reproductive competition. You’ll know what I’m talking about as soon as you read it. It’s wild.

All in all, a really solid title and one that anyone interested in mating theory should scoop.

Emotional trip down memory lane

I was a huge fan of Avicii’s / Bergling’s from 2011 onward. My friends and I saw him in concert countless times and often planned trips just to be able to catch another show. Each performance was incredible and mind-blowing — easily my best memories in the EDM scene.

Even though I was merely a fan of his, Bergling’s death still shook me quite well; I’ve struggled, sporadically, with some of the same issues he faced, which made the tragedy hit all too close to home.

I watched and enjoyed “Avicii: True Stories” when it first came out but also felt like it was missing some necessary details. Of course, there’s only so much you can include in a two-hour documentary, but, still — I was hungry for more. Fast forward to today and we have this book, “Tim.”

Oh, man, where to begin? It’s got a little bit of everything, including some closure. For fans, it recounts Bergling’s entire rise to stardom — not just the years after which he’d already reached the top. For the curious, it provides more details around his addictions and medical crises. And for the mental-health-focused, it delivers a powerful (albeit sad and emotional) message about helping others with anxiety and depression.

It goes without saying that no book can ever truly bring a loved one back or cure all wounds, but this one certainly comes close. It’s a warm and familiar trip down memory lane at times and a harrowing recollection at others.

Fans will love it for the musical tales and effective writing, while mental health advocates will respect it for its pulling back of the curtain. Thanks to the Bergling family and the author for putting this one out there. The world is a better place for it, and I am very grateful, too.

I’m always looking for ways to increase my physical well-being, and this audiobook provided just that. It’s centered around a particular, acronym-style framework: EFASS (Eat healthy food, Fluid intake choices, Air quality, Sufficient sleep, and Skin care choices.

That framework provides the foundation / backdrop for the manuscript’s contents, as the author then dives into each subject on a deeper level. I found all of the high-level categories to be interesting and helpful, but I especially benefitted from the content on sleep. I know I don’t sleep enough, and this one helped reinforce the fact that I really need to get more serious on that front.

If you’re looking for a fairly quick listen that will help you make some positive lifestyle changes, I’d pick this one up.

I’m not quite 40 yet, but it feels like it’s getting increasingly closer each day. That, combined with the fact that my gym is still closed as a result of the pandemic, keeps me interested in audiobooks like this one. I’m always looking for new (or even rehashed) ideas for workouts I can perform at home.

This one fell right in line with some of the other good ones I’ve listened to as of late. It starts with some helpful info on aging and the body, then jumps into exercises and necessary follow-up content such as that revolving around recovery and nutrition.

It’s a quick and effective listen. If you’re looking for a few new approachable fitness ideas, definitely pick this one up.

This audiobook is filled with helpful and uplifting affirmations / incantations. They’re centered around a number of categories, including the twelve steps applied to alcohol and emotional sobriety as well as faith, abundance, and recovery.

Though the book is mostly comprised of repeatable phrases / sentences, it’s still very powerful and valuable. The narrator recites each affirmation twice in an effort to help readers integrate it into their lives / subconscious minds.

There’s some peaceful / soothing background music that plays behind the affirmations as well. I enjoyed hearing that; it brought me some tranquility.

If you’re looking for a way to get some more confidence or certainty in your life, especially when it comes to addiction or pain, this audiobook is definitely a great option.

I really, really enjoyed this book. Headlee just “gets” it. In this one, she explains how we’re overworked, stressed out, and addicted to so-called efficiency. The problem with that pursuit of productivity, however, is that it will never make us happy. Only pausing and reclaiming a shared sense of humanity can do that, she says.

Thus, this book is a warning cry — a societal plea for us to slow down and milk life for all it’s worth. As Headlee states, that “worth” doesn’t necessarily come from the balance of our savings accounts, the quality of the goods we own, or our status in the world. Instead, it emanates from finding purpose, meaning, and stillness in a culture that’s terrified to slow down.

The best thing about this one, in my opinion, is that Headlee doesn’t attack the problem from an “out there” or unrealistic point of view. She doesn’t tell us to sell all our possessions and go live in the woods for the rest of our days. Rather, she urges us to find balance and enjoy both what society deems valuable as well as what evolution does. Then, we’ll finally discover the emotions we’ve been after all along.

It’s an utterly transformative read and one that I think the world really needs right now. I definitely recommend it.
