Just finished and I'm sad and joyous at the same time.

As the end of the book inched closer, I wondered how Steinbeck would wrap it up. It didn't seem to point to an ending that tied up all of the events in their epic struggle.

But of course, the struggle would continue, as would the Joad's spirit. Their hearts remained ever soft and merciful, as was demonstrated by Rosasharn's beautiful act of mercy to a stranger at the very end.

This book has taken its place alongside A Tale of Two Cities and The Kite Runner and A River Runs Through It and others as one of my all time favorites.

Dylan Baker's performance is masterful, each character with a distinct voice or tone that makes it distinguishable from the others. One of my favorite audiobooks.

Can't Get Past the Narrator

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A different narrator. It's as if the narrator doesn't understand the pivotal parts of the story. He sounds as if he's trying to sound ominous throughout the entire recording. But if everything sounds ominous then nothing does. His reading of the words didn't match the meaning of the words. All one level. It became monotonous.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Honestly, it's hard to tell. I switched to a different audiobook because of the drone of the narrator. I may need to buy the Kindle version because I think the story is good.

Outstanding Book and Narrator

Some books are considered classics because the story is unique and compelling. Others are praised because of the superlative writing style of the author. A handful of books have both qualities. Treasure Island is one.

This is the quintissential pirate book. Peg legs. A talking parrot perched atop a pirate's shoulder. Swashbuckling adventure on deck and atop the jib. And of course, Long John Silver. It's all here.

This is an astonishing book made even moreso when you consider Stevenson was just 31 years old when he wrote it. Subtle humor, action, sea adventure, double-crosses. And gorgeous prose.

And this particular audio version showcases an outstanding narrator. His various character voices were so distinct that at times I supposed I was listening to a dramatic retelling using various actors.

Buy it. Download it. Relish it.

Strained Believability (Possible Spoiler)

I've read or listened to a number of Deaver titles and really enjoy his stories and style. Without giving too much away, this story was clipping along right well when it suddenly became farcical and unbelievable. As a result, the rest of the book became fodder that I simply limped through.

The reader was good but I'd select a different Deaver title such as "The Bone Collector," "The Coffin Dancer," "The Empty Chair," or "The Blue Nowhere."
