Fun, and no brain cells lost
Revisado: 06-29-22
What a fun book! The story is interesting, the characters are likeable, and the writing is crisp. The author has a sense of humor, and it shows. I tend to shy away from cozies as they frequently disappoint, but this was wonderfully fun and well written. The narration was well done.

For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

Show, don't tell
Revisado: 06-29-22
The story is interesting with likeable characters. Unfortunately, it is mostly dialogue with repeated trivial actions described in excruciating detail. I lost count of the number of times Roger was asked for coffee, then tediously went through the entire dialogue of "Yes, sir. Coffee, sir. I went to the kitchen to prepare a carafe and brought it up to the small dining room/library/parlor." Every single time. Same with seeing people to the door. I was reminded of the padding that went into some college essays to bring the page count up to the minimum set by the professor. The writer has a wonderful imagination. I hope he finds a decent editor.
The narration was great.

Historia
Stephen Munro, a demobbed army officer, reconciles himself to taking a job as a footman to make ends meet. Employed at Wintringham Hall, the delightful but decaying Sussex country residence of the elderly Lady Susan Carey, his first task entails welcoming her eccentric guests to a weekend house-party, at which her bombastic nephew—who recognises Stephen from his former life—decides that an after-dinner séance would be more entertaining than bridge. Then Cicely disappears!

Soporific. Not much of a mystery. Also, could someone inform the narrator that "Mainwaring" is pronounced "Mannering?"

Historia
Rupert didn't especially want to be a prince. And he certainly never asked to be the second son of a royal line that really didn't need a spare. So he was sent out to slay a dragon and prove himself - a quest straight out of legend. But he also discovered the kinds of things legends tend to leave out, as well as the usual demons, goblins, the dreaded Night Witch - and even worse terrors hidden in the shadows of Darkwood. Rupert did find a fiery dragon - and a beautiful princess to rescue.

predictable and horrible narration
Revisado: 07-14-15
Would you try another book from Simon R. Green and/or John Keating?
I had enjoyed Green's other books, so decided to try this one. What a mistake. Flat characters, predictable plot, yet with an aggravating occasional glimpse of what might have been a great story.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of John Keating?
Rupert is a YOUNG man. Keating made him sound like a middle-aged accountant. All the other characters sounded identical, with English accents that, for no known reason, wander from the West Country through the Midlands.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Blue Moon Rising?
All the scenes with the Princess Julia - I'm sure that the intent was to make her a scrappy, self-reliant character. Instead, she's a strident, self-indulgent, poorly mannered harpy.

REALLY GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has potential, but needs a better editor.
Revisado: 06-30-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Better editing, more skillful weaving in of backstories, another narrator.
Would you be willing to try another one of Carrie Lee Martz’s performances?
No.
Was Jamie Quinn Mystery Collection: Box Set Books 1-3 worth the listening time?
Not really. The author could use some help tightening her plots. Long, intricate backstories and tangential information were stuck in at odd places and took up too much space. I was chapters in but the author was still setting up the plot. There was too much information. I kept wondering how/why any of that info was relevant. These books might work well in print form where skimming is easier. The narrator was not the correct choice for these books.
Any additional comments?
I really wanted to like this series. The author is on the right track and definitely has potential. This audiobook was provided to me for free in exchange for an unbiased review.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Just fun
Revisado: 03-19-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely! This was a phenomenal story, filled with roller coaster plot twists. The description sounded so cliched and depressing - man gets stranded on Mars and fights for survival. I had zero interest obtaining a Prozac prescription just to read this. However, several friends urged me to ignore the description and just listen to it. am so glad they did. This is a FUN, often funny book, no anti-depressants needed.
Who was your favorite character and why?
There's only one character, really.
Any additional comments?
The narrator is perfectly matched for the story. It is not great literature, but it doesn't pretend to be. It is a rollicking adventure with a bit of math and science thrown in. The main character is very likeable and you'll find yourself rooting for him.

Historia
Avery Shaw is having a bad week. First, she had to cover a story on a barricaded gunman who likes to dance naked in his window. Second, she's receiving death threats with her morning newspaper. Lastly, and most importantly, her mom keeps vetoing her outfit choices. It's all in a day's work for this hardworking, if easily distracted, reporter. Avery Shaw is hot on the trail of the story, even if it means tangling with her hot ex-boyfriend - the county sheriff - and the equally hot, if slightly shadier pawnshop owner down the street.

Why?
Revisado: 03-19-15
What disappointed you about Who, What, Where, When, Die?
What didn't? Immature, shallow, strident, screechy lead character with anger management issues and no redeeming qualities. Her best friend has a tiff with the future mother-in-law, so the girls (not women, these are middle-schoolers) vandalize the car with shaving cream, rotten eggs, etc. Then there's the fixation on male body parts and sex. The two lead men are hunky, of course. They have no personalities. They are just meat. This had Stephanie Plum potential, but it misses by a mile.
What was most disappointing about Amanda M. Lee’s story?
There was a story?
What didn’t you like about Angel Clark’s performance?
Irritating high-pitched voice often wandered into nails-on-blackboard territory. Perfect match for the character, so perhaps it was intentional.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Who, What, Where, When, Die?
Not enough space here.
Any additional comments?
Formulaic with flat characters. There were obvious futile attempts at humor. The best joke in the book was unintentional; the lead character described "gossiping about politics..." I would be stunned if any character in the book could identify a single elected official. I don't set the bar high for these types of books. They do not aspire to be much more than a quick, escapist read while waiting at the doctor's office or the airport. Believe me, I did not expect great literature, but I did expect the story to be fun. This was just annoying and a waste of my time.
