Where does The Last Kingdom rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I had previously read many of Simon Scarrow's fiction of Romans in Britain, and enjoyed them. These here make a good follow-on. I find the writing a little superior and the narration is good. It's interesting for anyone who finds this period before 1066 intriguing, or who has an interest in the influence of Vikings on British history.

What made the experience of listening to The Children of Henry VIII the most enjoyable?

Would it be crazy to almost shed a tear, after so much time, for a queen who would be later known as Bloody Mary? That should tell you what a gripping story this is, and so well read.

What other book might you compare The Children of Henry VIII to and why?

The previous book in history by the same author on the wives of Henry VIII

What about Simon Prebble’s performance did you like?

No unnecessary histrionics, but with impeccable phrasing and weight

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The final death of Queen Mary

Any additional comments?

Recommend this to someone who thinks they only like crime and suspense novels.

What did you like best about Perv? What did you like least?

The author read the material in a way that added to the informational and entertainment value of the message itself. I had the feeling at the start that I just had to swallow the message whole, and lie back and enjoy the book.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

There were many interesting facts and data. Often, they touched on sensitive areas that too few are willing to approach

Have you listened to any of Jesse Bering’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

Did Perv inspire you to do anything?

Being better informed will help me be less instantly judgmental, I hope, and to base things on facts and actual harms or benefits

A gripping story

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-02-10

The story is gripping and has layers of mystery that first are added like an onion and then are peeled away as the book comes to a close. The narrator makes a decent fist of pronouncing Swedish places names and people. Once the initial cast of characters are in place, there are not too many names to remember.
