Historia
The ninth floor. Nine armies, each led by rich and powerful aliens from across the galaxy. Each team has one objective: to capture and hold the castle at the very center of the battlefield. Strategy, alliances, pitched battles, and, of course, betrayal ... It all makes for great fun and even greater television. After all, none of these powerful aliens really die when they’re playing war. Except this time. This time, winner takes all. Those who fall, stay in the ground.

Historia
A man awakens in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there. Chased by a group from his own time, his sole hope for survival lies in regaining his missing memories, making allies among the locals, and perhaps even trusting in their superstitious boasts. His only help from the “real world” should have been a guidebook entitled The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, except his copy exploded during transit.

A well balanced Medieval Sci-fi novel
Revisado: 07-18-24
Sanderson masterfully wove elements of Sci-fi into what is effectively a medieval Isekai. Featuring a relatable underdog you can't not root for even when he's not rooting for himself.

He wasn’t supposed to play the game on his own, but now he wanted to build a legacy for Joan, a sanctuary in a virtual world. It was supposed to be a place where folk could come to get away from the terrors that the land held, a utopia he would create with his bare hands. It was supposed to be Joan’s legacy. A Great Listen
Revisado: 10-30-19
Disclaimer: I received this audiobook at no-cost from the author in exchange for an unbiased review.
The Legacy Builder isn’t a book about a character who found this character who discovered this niche class that lets him become this super powerful OP character. This is a book about Lincoln, a man who’s past his prime, was never interested in virtual reality games, but he came to Barakdor to build a town to honor his wife. This was something we’ve seen before in city builder LitRPG, but that’s not what this felt like. The publisher summary described it well saying “Fantasy Collides with LitRPG in this first novel from The Land of Barakdor.”
The plot starts off slow, but not necessarily in a bad way. This isn’t much of an adventure novel, but it does have a healthy amount of action in it and its action is well-written. The focus of the book is Lincoln working to build a city that will stand as an honor and legacy, not to go adventuring and get rich. The world around the plot shines through at times, there’s some interesting world-building concepts that while I can’t say are completely unique or that they’re completely threshed out, they are very novel and interesting to read and find more out about.
The Main character, Lincoln, is a clever man, but it doesn’t come across as in your face clever or too clever. There is a little bit of where Lincoln “cheats” the game by using loopholes in logic to get what he wants, but it’s a minor thing and it fits fairly well in the system that it was found in. Lincoln is relatable, but he’s not the idealized protagonist I’ve come to expect in LitRPG, the idealized version of the video game nerd most fans of the genre tend to be. He’s, as I mentioned earlier, older, not as accustomed to video games, this is new territory to him, this makes him interesting.
The narration is easy to listen to. As I listened the minutes loped by and kept me engaged. The writing was natural and and turned into narration with ease.
Overall, I quite enjoyed this book and I look forward to the next in the series. It's not the stereotypical LitRPG, but it still qualifies and is great for someone looking to get out of that mold or to start crossing over into LitRPG territory.

Being a beta tester for Radical Interactive was not the dream job Will had envisioned, but he had hoped it would get his foot in the door to one day becoming a graphic designer for the company. As he filled out his new-hire paperwork, he never realized he was literally signing his life away. Now a phenomenally successful company, Radical Interactive was secretly working on something behind closed doors that would change both the medical and gaming industries forever. The Realm was reborn. The only problem was that it wasn't a game - at least not to those trapped inside.

Bread and Butter LitRPG
Revisado: 10-17-19
Disclaimer: I received this audiobook at no-cost from the author in exchange for an unbiased review.
This book is the bread and butter of LitRPG. It's a solid work that doesn't push any boundaries. It's quintessential LitRPG; you will get your hero's numbers going up, you'll have a good time, and sometimes that's all you need. The premise behind the MC getting trapped in the game is one of the more unique methods that I've seen which I really enjoyed.
The plot is solid, fairly standard starting zone MMORPG questline stuff. That being said it's not written in a way to be boring, more along the lines of familiar. The stats are frankly minimal, which for audiobookers tends to be the preference, though I'm aware that's not universal.
The narration is solid, I've had no issues with it. Even sped up to 2.5x speed it and the story still flow in an easily followed way. The writing feels natural and conveys the main character's thoughts and emotions well.
Speaking of the main character, he's very relatable, though at times I think he might be too much of a blank slate. This is great for when you want a little bit of the ability to lose yourself into the role of the MC. Looking for strong character growth and development this falls a bit flat, though this is very much a first book and I really look forward to seeing any consequences of the technology Phoenix Grey has created for the series.
Overall, this was a solid book that fulfills the hunger for LitRPG well. It's not pushing the boundaries of what LitRPG is, but it stands firmly in the genre and I'd feel comfortable recommending it to anyone interested in the genre.

You know those times when you’re surrounded by a squadron of bloodthirsty ninjas, your back is to the wall, you’re down to your last heart container, and all hope seems lost? Great book with some unique ideas.
Revisado: 10-10-19
Disclaimer: I received this audiobook at no-cost from the author in exchange for an unbiased review.
So I really enjoyed this book. The MC was relatable and enjoyable to follow. The humor in this book led towards absurdism and references to other movies and games, though I never felt like I wasn't getting the joke if I didn't know the reference and the references didn't feel dated, though some may be more sensitive to that than others. Most of all, the book was unafraid to poke fun at itself.
The author built a video game world where the video game mechanics are explained and treated as we would the laws of the universe. in addition, the main character's class is a unique take on a cliche idea that takes something overpowered and makes it comparatively underpowered, but still useful.
One thing I feel I absolutely need to point out us even though it's a hard LitRPG with statistics and experience and leveling, there are minimal stat listings. Usually it's only the relevant stats at that moment and the only outright listed stat block is at the very end of the book in the character listing.
The narration was easy to follow, and the book's writing translated well to being read aloud. If I had to point out one thing that I didn't particularly care for about the book it would be that there is minimal actual challenge and repercussions that the main character faces, the stakes feel low. This is partly due to the nature of the book, but at the same time, it is something I feel could use improvement.

Fantastic Story with Fantastic Narration
Revisado: 02-02-18
Plot
I’ve gotta say, this book just grabbed ahold of me and didn’t let go. The pacing was spot on and the book ended far quicker than I wanted it to. Brent Weeks put together a fantastic story that grips you and keeps you on the edge of your seat while he takes you on a whirlwind adventure. The story had a fantastic resolution and ending and is set perfectly for the next book in the series.
Characters
Brent Weeks’ characters are superb, they aren’t the most real feeling, but they have a depth that makes them fantastic and larger than life. The biggest thing I’d have to say about his characters are that they’re charismatic. Even when you find things out about the characters that would normally make them dislikable you still don’t really dislike them. The entire world with all the people in it is incredibly well built and the interaction of the magic and the people within is great.
Narration
Simon Vance did a fantastic job narrating this novel. He attributed greatly to the likability of the characters in giving them voices that made them real. I’ve listened to narrators that just read the book, but that is not the case with Simon. He gave the novel life in his narration.

Historia
The Tower of Babel is the greatest marvel in the world. Immense as a mountain, the ancient Tower holds unnumbered ringdoms, warring and peaceful, stacked one on the other like the layers of a cake. It is a world of geniuses and tyrants, of airships and steam engines, of unusual animals and mysterious machines. Soon after arriving for his honeymoon at the Tower, the mild-mannered headmaster of a small village school, Thomas Senlin, gets separated from his wife, Marya, in the overwhelming swarm of tourists, residents, and miscreants.

A story of a man climbing a tower and so much more
Revisado: 01-20-18
Plot
This was not the book I expected it to be. I expected a fantasy action novel that was at its core a dungeon crawl, but what I got was so much better. The plot of Senlin Ascends is literally the title; Senlin ascends the tower. The pacing was steady and the end had a climactic ending that left it perfectly set up for the next book in the series. Josiah did a phenomenal job in peppering the story with mystery so that you cannot help, but try to figure out what's truly going on.
Characters
Senlin is an unconventional hero. Starting off he's a fairly unpresuming headmaster from a small village school. He's very mild-mannered individual and references his guidebook to the tower frequently. I think this was the hardest thing for me to wrap my head around. Josiah created Senlin remarkably. The other characters I have a hard time judging. They have plenty of exposure, but one thing Josiah shows you quite well is that every one on the Tower of Babel has secrets.
Narration
This is the first book I've heard narrated by John Banks. His voicing for Senlin was superb and other male characters were just as outstanding. The only thing I think he fell flat on were voicing female characters. His tone and enunciation were stunning, as was his ability to put emotion in his voice.

A story of a broken man just trying to go forward.
Revisado: 01-13-18
Plot
This is not some tale about an epic hero on a quest to save the world; this is the story of a a man who has been broken. It is a bard's quest, not to save the world, but to right a wrong. The pacing is outstanding, action moves forward quickly, but it moments that need a little special attention get it. When the story seems as if it's about to sputter and stall, Carol Berg switches things up and everything is refreshed and renews your interest in the story.
Characters
Aiden McAllister is a broken man. My first thought upon meeting him is he's a bard from a tabletop game going on on a quest, he just dumped his DEX and STR to reach godly levels of performance and given a backstory that makes things interesting. The other characters are a wonderful collection of supporting cast, villains, and allies. Aiden McAllister is a broken man whose music has died, and you feel his apathy, and struggle to move forward despite the fact that a dead man isn't supposed to move. Carol Berg didn't create characters in this story, she created people.
Narration
Jeremy Arthur's narration is nothing short of spectacular. My biggest, and in fact only, complaint is that I had a hard time picturing him as a musician singing for the gods. His inflection and tone are however, both perfectly on point. Jeremy Arthur becomes the broken hero.
Claire Christie was a perfect accompaniment and counterpoint to Jeremy Arthur. The transition to her narration was a sudden and refreshing change. She did a wonderful job pushing emotion and turmoil into her own narrating. Even though she had significantly less to narrate, her portion was no less important for it.
