I'm in the States, and I've a curiosity for you. I grew up in the mountains in upstate NY. I've seen many fields with solitary trees, a few even had little fences around them. I'm leaving them be.

Historia
In 1850s South Carolina, an enslaved woman named Rose faced a crisis: the imminent sale of her daughter Ashley. Thinking quickly, she packed a cotton bag for her with a few items, and, soon after, the nine-year-old girl was separated from her mother and sold. Decades later, Ashley’s granddaughter Ruth embroidered this family history on the sack in spare, haunting language. Historian Tiya Miles carefully traces these women’s faint presence in archival records, and, where archives fall short, she turns to objects, art, and the environment to write a singular history of slavery.

Should be required reading
Revisado: 11-18-21
Have the hankies handy. I'm white, from a small rural town in upstate NY. I spent much of my reading furious and in tears. I know I can never truly understand the trauma enslavement inflicted on African-Americans, but I think this book brought me closer. This book should be required reading for high school social studies

Historia
With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

Having Alan Cumming read this himself made it that much more intense. Have tissues handy.

Historia
The Celts are one of the most well-known groups in Europe and one of the least understood. Depending on which classifications are used, the Celts are also one of the oldest civilizations in Europe. In the centuries before Christ, the Celts were spread out across much of continental Europe, and though they are mostly identified with Gaul, evidence suggests they also spread as far as Portugal.

Don't waste your money
Revisado: 09-22-20
There are constant mispronounciations. Granted Gaelic names can be difficult, but make an effort. There's a LOT of just plain wrong information in this book. The Morrigan & The Dagda are/were not married, even though they had sex over a river. Brighid is not the Morrigan's daughter. Need I go on?
