Great story, not the best narrator
Revisado: 06-25-24
I really liked the story, which kept my attention the whole way with its depth, and believable and likable characters. The barrator was mostly ok but the stilted way she mispronounced the article “a” throughout and Spanish names like Andres was grating. Otherwise I really enjoyed the story and would read more by same author.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Good book. Reader fine.
Revisado: 06-30-21
I appreciated the audio version of this influential book. The reader is excellent and I’ve heard him read other things very well. My only complaint was his pronouncing the DSM-V repeatedly as the letter “V”, rather than the Roman numeral 5, for Fifth edition. It’s a very well-known reference book for anyone in the counseling or psychology field, so the mistake was jarring each time. Other than that, excellent!

Hopeless and desolate, they turn to a legend of the Tower, the mysterious Sphinx. I wasn’t sure about the series but halfway through the second one I was hooked. I hope the third one doesn’t disappoint; I’m really liking the characters now.

Historia
With the story of her conversion as a backdrop, Rosaria Butterfield invites us into her home to show us how God can use “radical, ordinary hospitality” to bring the Gospel to our lost friends and neighbors. Such hospitality sees our homes as not our own but as God’s tools for the furtherance of his kingdom as we welcome those who look, think, believe, and act differently from us into our everyday, sometimes messy lives - helping them see what true Christian faith really looks like.

Sometimes good writers can’t narrate well, but this was amazing. Spoiler alert!! Especially when it got to the part about singing to her dying mother and you get to hear what she actually sang, in her own voice!! tears and so challenged by this book

Historia
In Gay Girl, Good God, author Jackie Hill Perry shares her own story, offering practical tools that helped her in the process of finding wholeness. Jackie grew up fatherless and experienced gender confusion. She embraced masculinity and homosexuality with every fiber of her being. She knew that Christians had a lot to say about all of the above. But was she supposed to change herself? How was she supposed to stop loving women, when homosexuality felt more natural to her than heterosexuality ever could?

It’s not often that an author is also a poet and spoken word performer, but you get both with Jackie Hill Perry reading her own story, and the melody of the words carries you along. I very much enjoyed hearing her heart behind her words in her personal reading.

Historia
For Jeff Johnston, a young historical researcher for a Civil War novelist, reality is redefined on a bitter cold night near the close of a lingering winter. He meets Annie, an intense and lovely young woman suffering from vivid nightmares. Haunted by the dreamer and her unrelenting dreams, Jeff leads Annie on an emotional odyssey through the heartland of the Civil War in search of a cure. On long-silenced battlefields their relationship blossoms–two obsessed lovers linked by unbreakable chains of history, torn by a duty that could destroy them both.

Disappointing story, good history of Civil War.
Revisado: 03-04-18
I love love Connie Willis and have read most of what she’s written. Every once in a while she writes a lovely but depressingly sad story, like this one. It feels like she’s trying to say something poignant but doesn’t really know how to give meaning and purpose to suffering. Kind of like the Winds of Marble Arch (which if you liked you might like this story.) As usual her historical research and feeling like you were IN the Civil War was spot on, but ultimately the story just felt sad and hopeless. Read one of her many other delightful works instead..

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Good plot, weak characters, too raunchy
Revisado: 12-15-17
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. It had its witty parts, but the main character is not believable or terribly likable, and the amount of profanity and sex (more than The Martian) made me not able to recommend it to my young friends who’d really love all the science..
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Ok, pretty empty, fine but not inspiring
Have you listened to any of Rosario Dawson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
First one I’ve heard
Was Artemis worth the listening time?
Not really

In a not-too-distant future, a simple outpatient procedure that has been promised to increase empathy between romantic partners has become all the rage. So when Briddey Flannigan's fiancé proposes that he and Briddey undergo the procedure, she is delighted! Only, the results aren't quite as expected. Instead of gaining an increased empathetic link with her fiancé, Briddey finds herself hearing the actual thoughts of one of the nerdiest techs in her office. And that's the least of her problems.

One of the best Connie Willis I've read yet. Listened to twice. Only problem with narrator who has a lovely Irish accent is that she doesn't know how to pronounce Notre Dame I don't think, nor Choctaw (2 syllables).

Historia
We never know what will happen next in Florida. We know only that, any minute now, something will. Every few months, Dave Barry gets a call from some media person wanting to know, "What the hell is wrong with Florida?" Somehow, the state's acquired an image as a subtropical festival of stupid, and as a loyal Floridian, Dave begs to differ. Sure, there was the 2000 election. And people seem to take their pants off for no good reason. And it has flying insects the size of LeBron James. But it is a great state, and Dave is going to tell you why.

Half of a Good Book
Revisado: 03-07-17
What did you like best about Best. State. Ever.? What did you like least?
The first few chapters of this were first rate, vintage Dave Barry - skewering Florida, and I laughed out loud. Then it switched to a travelogue of South Florida tourist traps and got, honestly, boring, before turning raunchy in the last chapter or two. It would have been an excellent shorter book, but this was pretty bad and I regretted giving it as a gift before I'd finished it.
Would you recommend Best. State. Ever. to your friends? Why or why not?
No. Not one of his better books. See above.

Historia
It's April, 1988, a month before Kinsey Millhone's 38th birthday, and she's alone in her office doing paperwork when a young man arrives unannounced. He has a preppy air about him and looks as if he'd be carded if he tried to buy booze, but Michael Sutton is 27, an unemployed college dropout. Twenty-one years earlier, a four-year-old girl disappeared, and a recent reference to her kidnapping has triggered a flood of memories.

I've read the whole series, and loved the heart in this one, and the point of view of the villains. Gave it four stars bc I could've done without the seamy sex scene, and now I can't pass it along to my kids..
