Authentic 21st Century Critique of Caribbean Life
Revisado: 10-22-24
The narration of a critique of a patriarchal society through the lens of a young, impressionable sexualized woman who grows into herself was phenomenal. The voice narration did an excellent job with both characters. I loved Obediah’s character in all of his haughtiness, honesty and later, humility. This book was unapologetically and refreshingly Caribbean right to the bone and one of the first novels I’ve read to tackle contemporary issues without seeming vapid.

Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

Brilliant Memoir
Revisado: 09-20-24
I have always loved Viola Davis, her artistry and many brilliant performances. Hearing her story in her own voice was yet another of her moving performances and made me love her even more as the amazing woman, mother, daughter, Black actress she is.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Brilliant Storytelling
Revisado: 08-29-24
An absolutely captivating read. Amazing narration by the author. Equally educating as exceptional. Left me doing research about pre-colonial and colonial India as well as medical research. Undeniably one of the most detailed, people oriented stories and one of the best books I’ve read in many years.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Subtle yet Searing
Revisado: 02-23-24
Fantastic storytelling. I loved this brilliant, subtle yet searing review of a mixed community/small town American life and how things happen- I think this story has a way of saying quiet truths which is as valid today as it was in the 30s where this story is set. McBride is an excellent author and his characters are all memorable.

Historia
Adrift in a raft after a deadly ship explosion, 10 people struggle for survival at sea. Three days pass. Short on water, food, and hope, they spot a man floating in the waves. They pull him in. “Thank the Lord we found you,” a passenger says. “I am the Lord,” the man whispers. So begins Mitch Albom’s most beguiling and inspiring novel yet.

Compelling Storytelling
Revisado: 02-15-24
Great narration. Loved the character development/ reveals and the plot twists up until the final one which revealed the “cause”. This fell flat for me and made the plot ending dull but otherwise the message and storyline was strong.
