Interesting plot, good narration

First, the narrator distinguished the different voices without going over the top. Tone and inflection were appropriate for circumstances. A “off” narrator can make even a good story unlistenable.

The characters were well-defined in terms of being good and bad which made it easy to root for the good guys even when some of their actions were wrong. The plot unfolded interestingly and the end was satisfying.

Mostly boring

I generally love Andrew Mayne books but this one just didn’t keep my attention. It seemed meandering and repetitive and went nowhere fast. Like another reviewer said, Jessica’s narrator spoke robotically which was distracting. The end was mostly satisfying.

Over the top…

…plot and narration. Far-fetched interrelated conspiracies, cartoonish villains (esp voices), painfully portrayed voice of character with damaged vocal cords, exaggerated female voices (too high/ too bright/too breathy/childlike). Now that I’ve laid it out, I question why I gave it 3 stars…I guess because I finished it.

Beyond belief

I can suspend disbelief as well as the next reader, but this book had me figuratively rolling my eyes. Allison was initially characterized as a normal human being, then WHAM! She is suddenly a sociopath bent on revenge. None of the characters was likeable and Claire in particular had no redeeming qualities, very one-dimensionally awful. The book was also very repetitive; thoughts, details, themes, etc, were reiterated so much I can only assume it was done to lengthen the book. I’m glad this was an Audible Plus book; I might have been vengeful if I’d paid for it.

Beautifully written book…

…about the flawed nature of humans and how their perspectives borne of individual experiences can lead to wrong and sometimes tragic conclusions.

The intertwined events are mostly poignant if not downright sad. Yet you want—need—to know the consequences of the actions of the characters. You are invested in the outcomes, not all of which are happy. But there is satisfaction in them, a sense of rightness in how things end.

Read, don’t listen to this book

The story was good with a nice twist at the end. But unless you want to listen to Velma from Scooby Doo talk for 6+ hours, don’t get the Audible version.

Different in a good way

What a story! Explosive revelations unfolding one at a time, kind of like watching a train wreck, lol. Characters and their backgrounds weren’t fully developed and sometimes the tone/ inflection of the narrator didn’t seem to fit scenarios, but the story was engaging enough to slough off those distractions.

Entertaining book but…

…unrealistic in characters’ actions. Being vague so I don’t spoil it for those intending to read it. Worth reading if free (Audible Plus or Kindle Unlimited). The narrator was very effective but did mispronounce several words.

Good story, satisfying ending
