A fantastic book performed fantastically well!

This book did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life such that their interactions and emotions felt authentic, which is why I can say this book is as solidly written as it is enjoyable to read.

It starts off with a few scenes of bullying which made me cringe a bit because they were so well written. In hindsight, that was my first clue to how invested I would be in the Characters.

What follows is probably one of the best romance books, or books in general, that I’ve read. Eschewing high stakes and other over-the-top dramatics, the book is very tightly focused on two people who are grappling with who they are and how they feel about each other. Both viewpoint characters grew on me as they grew as people and grew together.

This book does a great job making the setting at large feel lived in and having the characters (not just the main two) feel as full people with friends, interests, and baggage from before the story. A great mix of exposition and “showing over telling” keeps the story flowing and immersive.

The audio performer did a good job conveying who was speaking and their emotions throughout the book. Sound quality was clear and there were no editing/mixing errors that I noticed.

I will definitely be reading more of the KRT’s books and listening to other works performed by Summer Moon. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good romance, an entertaining read, or a change-up from the typical paranormal fantasy book.

A Fantastic Conclusion to the Series!

This series, like many sacred artists within it, has improved with every step on its path. Over the years, the world, characters, Will’s writing, and Travis’s narration have become familiar companions at work, home, and many places besides. Waybound neatly builds on all that came before, blending the familiar with the new in exciting ways. I definitely recommend this series to anyone, and I am happy to say Waybound is a great conclusion.

To clarify: Threshold, which just released (hence my re-listen to Waybound and this review), is an anthology book of short stories and bonus chapters well worth the read to those looking for more of these characters and setting AFTER completing Waybound, but is not required to appreciate the main books of the series.

If you’ve read this whole review: Gratitude.

This book combined familiar elements - an orphan protagonist, mage academy, shadowy conspiracies, etc. - in a refreshing way. The performance by the cast was exceptional, as was the music and sound effects. A great experience from start to finish. I was even blown away by how intricately and hilariously well done the end credits were. I’m looking forward to the sequel this fall.

This was well written, with a complex world and great characterization. A great mix of soft/hard for the system, allowing it to be an asset to the story without info dumping or breaking the narrative flow. The performers did a fantastic job bringing this to life. I cannot wait for the sequel!

This book was well written, with interesting characters and a glimpse at a very interesting setting. The narrators did a great job voicing their characters with varied tones and voices to distinguish among them and their changing moods/circumstances. 5/5 would recommend and I hope the next book comes out soon.

A great conclusion to the arc started in Book 2

As stated in the title, this book is essentially the second half of the arc started in book 2. Book 2 did a good job with the smaller arcs which comprise the first half of the overall arc of books 2 and 3, and book 3 kept the momentum and finished strong. I cannot wait for book 4, as there are a lot of interesting places the plot could go.

The narrator did a fantastic job, as always. I’m going to look into his other performances while I wait for book 4.

I definitely recommend this series to those who haven’t given it a try yet, and I recommend this book to those who have. If you waited to get book 2 until the overall arc it started was complete, I highly recommend you get book 2 and 3 now.

Great as a stand-alone or as a companion to See These Bones/Red Right Hand/One Tin Soldier

I’ve recently listened to See These Bones and it’s sequels, and I wanted to experience other stories from that setting. Of the three independent shorter stories currently available, this is my favorite. It’s unique in that it’s essentially a heist movie in a broken world with super powers, but what really makes this worth a listen is how the protagonist reflects on his place in it as a normal person. To those who have listened to the main trilogy, you may find some details familiar once they are described, but I can assure you that this story has twists to it that you probably wouldn’t expect. Those twists are the other main reason I recommend the story (especially if you’ve have or plan to read Red Right Hand). To those who haven’t read the main trilogy, this book stands on its own and is well written. Details regarding the larger setting aren’t explained in detail, but they don’t need to be. Key elements are explained sufficiently for context and narrative support. All the books in this setting are performed by the same person, and he does an outstanding job. I’ll be looking into his and the author’s other work for my next few credits as they are nuanced artists of their respective crafts.

First, I recommend listening at .9X as it seemed to match the tempo the original narrator used.

Performance: A good overall performance with few notable errors (the odd pronunciation of a previously established location and what appears to be the use of the skipper’s voice instead of the XO’s by mistake for one line later in the book). Characters were distinguishable and tone/emotion was evident. The notable caveat is that Luke Daniels was absolutely phenomenal with the first 6 books, creating a stark contrast with the current narrator’s efforts. Expecting this narrator out of the gate and being used to him from the previous book softened this contrast somewhat, compared to the launch of book 7.

Story: This book reads like the action packed second half of book 7. It picks up fairly quickly after the previous book’s end and brings the conclusion of the recent story arc, I was somewhat surprised that 2 plot points I loosely predicted when listening to the previous book actually manifested. I wasn’t sure how they would be executed in particular, but I was surprised by how accurate I was. They worked with the plot and made sense with previous information, so I’d say it was moderately veiled foreshadowing with some minor telegraphing.

The one thing this book did that was a minor let down was set in stone something I was briefly worried about and thought satisfactorily resolved since book 2 (not one of the 2 aforementioned plot points): Alcubierre Drives in this setting now don’t behave like actual Alcubierre Drives are theorized to (and were implied to throughout the series). How the drives and chutes were handled previously made sense: Humanity calculated and maintained narrow chutes of space free of navigation hazards and the ships warped space to move through those chutes. This book implies humanity stumbled upon a natural network of existing chutes instead of engineering it. Furthermore, it implies that the network nodes largely determine travel performance, not the ships’ hardware. Think hyperlanes instead of warp drives, or a conveyor belt moving a package instead of a runner, This would be a total non-issue for me except the plot hinges on this apparent change in how FTL works in the series, which was jarring to me when it happened. I got over it fairly quickly though.

TL;DR: A good performance of a great conclusion to the latest story arc with hints at where the series could go from here. I definitely recommend this to all readers/listeners of the series, despite the occasional error or minor plot hole.

This book is one of my favorites to read and listen to. I enjoy the unique technologies and setting, as well as how the characters interact with both in compelling ways. It is a very different first contact scenario than those encountered in other sci-fi books I have read. I always found the performer, Benjamin L . Darcie, to be good despite the lack of an expected amount of... vigor in his performance. I decided to listen to the book again, through kindle unlimited as I usually do (is is probably my 5th listen in 3 years), and was surprised to hear a different performer. This performer, David de Vries, did a fantastic job! There is energy, emotion, and technical expertise throughout his performance, which really took my experience to the next level. The quality of the recording has also improved. I am pleasantly surprised to find that even my purchased audiobooks of this series, which I bought last year, have been updated to the de Vries version, so I can now experience familiar stories in a new way without additional cost. If you would like to try this book without using an audible credit, I recommend checking it out though kindle unlimited, as the entire series is available to read and listen to for $10 a month. This is cheaper than the cost of a credit, even if you don’t like the book. If you do like the book, you can binge listen to all the currently released books for $10 in that month instead of having to wait a month for your next credit or spend ~$90 on enough 3 credit packs to listen to the entire series (which is still ongoing). I hope you give this series a go!
