Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

An interesting story in an interesting world
Revisado: 01-23-20
I have had this book in my library for some time now, and by the time I finally got around to listening to it I had forgotten any sort of description of the book or anything like that, so I was essentially going in ignorant.
The world-building and story development were well paced and I found myself unable to put the book down at a lot of points. The system of magic and the world itself seemed very well flushed out, and I'm definitely interested in reading more from this author!

A really good read (or listen) for fantasy lovers
Revisado: 06-21-19
When I listened to this novel, I had just finished a steampunk book, so going "back to the roots" of fantasy was very refreshing to me. The narrator did a very good job with this book, and I wanted to say that I thought the female voices were well-done, which is something I don't often see with male narrators. Right off the bat, I became heavily invested in characters in the book due to the sudden drama that occurs. I was interested in one set of characters, and then the POV would change and I would be disappointed, only to find myself then interested in this new/different character. I found all of the main POV characters to be very interesting in their own way and the way that the story was developing had me hooked. I think the POV changes and time changes that occur were well done, not skipping too much important things while progressing the story to where it needed to be. Overall, I very much enjoyed the story and would happily listen to the next one when time (and money!) permits. I would certainly recommend!
*Spoiler* My only disappointment was that the book for me seemed to end in the middle of a very important scene. It felt as if the book should have ended either before the event started or at some resolution phase.
I received this audiobook for free, and this in no way shaped my opinions.

Surprisingly compelling fantasy based on plumbing?
Revisado: 06-21-19
Just the other day I had been thinking, how does anyone come up with anything new in fantasy? It seems as if most all ideas have probably been used before, and most books are just re-skinned versions of other stories. And then Jude Fawley came along with this novel. Plumbing, while a very novel idea, did not seem a very compelling fantasy read to me. When I had read that it was fantasy plumbing, I was immediately not interested in the book. However, I wanted to give the book a listen just for the novelty of the idea. Once I was actually a chunk of the way into the novel, I was hooked. The characters seemed well-rounded and likable, I thoroughly enjoyed the new look on plumbing as being something for only the highest members of society rather than a simple blue-collar job. At this point in my read, I actually wanted to finish and start a reread of the book because I felt I would be able to see a lot more things that were going on in the onset of the story now that I was more invested.
Overall, the book was a great book with an amazing narrator that I would highly recommend to anyone who is looking for something a little different.

Not a bad steampunky, book.
Revisado: 05-14-19
~3.5 stars. I initially wasn't very into this books setting, characters, etc. As the book progressed, I became more invested into the storyline and I think that I ended up enjoying the book quite a bit. There are a few things that I would recommend the author to improve upon. The book did well at keeping me interested and not feeling sluggish at points where there was less conflict occurring. I think that several elements were adopted from other famous works without properly making them fit that took away from the story. Examples like characters saying "By the old Gods and the new" and "What in the seven hells" are phrases that I recognize from ASOIAF, but don't make since in this story (what old Gods and what new Gods are they talking about?).
This could be more of a preference, but I would have liked more world building and understanding what the world looked like, how everyone (not just in the cities mentioned) live, other religious beliefs, etc. I was also interested in learning more about how the technology functions, which I hope will be covered in later novels. I definitely see potential in this series being quite good.
On another note, and this could also just be personal preference, I think the narrator almost ruined this book. One of the main reasons I was having trouble getting into this book was the narrator. I didn't find his normal reading voice that appealing. I felt he also had trouble conveying the emotion of the situation and characters in the entire novel. Some of his voices were somewhat ridiculous (such as a certain Queen's Paw that sounded like Batman), and sometimes he would slip out of a character's voice while speaking, or forgetting to speak with that character's voice that confused me at parts.
Overall, I would likely read the next book in the series, hoping that the author continues to improve in writing quality.
Also, I received this book for free, and that in no way influenced my review.

Unexpectedly good!
Revisado: 05-13-19
After coming out of HoA, I was unsure about this book. I've never really read any 'flintlock fantasy,' and the changing of characters from the first era was scary for me, but I was pleasantly surprised. I loved this book. The old world somehow made new, the evolution of magic, and the new characters all played into this being an amazing book. I had worried about missing Era 1 characters, but I was so absorbed by these new characters you don't even think that anything is missing!

A great follow up to TFE.
Revisado: 05-13-19
The buildup in this novel gets very intense. Some people think the story is a little slow in this book with slow progression, but I think it was fine pacing. A lot of interesting developments take place since the events of the first book. Sanderson keeps it interesting even after such a huge arc being wrapped up in the previous novel.

Revisado: 05-13-19
I'm trying to hold off before doing a second read through, but this book is so enticing. I finished it several months ago, and I still go back and listen to clips from it. Brandon creates the most amazing magic systems, and I love the way he does it. Scadriel is such an interesting place and you feel like you know it by the time the story is over. Many of the characters are relatable and likeable, and it was an easy listen. I say it all the time, but Michael Kramer just adds that much more to the story with his narration.
