Historia
An AI overseer and a human crew arrive on a distant planet to salvage an ancient UN starship. The overseer is unhappy. The crew, well, they're certainly no A-team. Not even a C-team on the best of days. And worse? Urmahon Beta, the planet, is at the ass-end of nowhere. Everybody expects this to be a long, ugly, and thankless job. Then it all goes disastrously wrong. What they thought was an uninhabited backwater turns out to be anything but empty.

A hot mess!
Revisado: 02-06-21
Paid only 2.95 on a daily deal and it was still too much.
Rambling pointless 'storyline' and one of the most unprofessional narrations I've ever had the displeasure of listening to.
Apart from that, it was great!

Historia
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

Rating reflects narrator only.
Revisado: 08-18-20
I LOVED The Three-Body Problem and even though the narrator would not have been my first choice, his voice didn't distract me from the story.
This narrator, however, has completely ruined this audiobook for me. I've rarely heard such dreadful narration and am surprised at so many favorable responses. His voice is monotone and robotic to the point that it sounds autotuned. Multiple instances of terribly erroneous inflection and pronunciation, too. Just awful. Print version, here I come.

Historia
Felix Allsey is a travel writer with a keen eye for the paranormal, and he's carved out a unique, if only slightly lucrative, niche for himself in nonfiction; he writes travelogues of the country's most haunted places, after haunting them himself. When he convinces the owner of the infamous Rotterdam Mansion to let him stay on the premises for two weeks, he believes he's finally found the location that will bring him a best seller. Then things start going wrong: screams from upstairs, figures in the thresholds, and more than what should be in any basement.

Ocker had me at 'boo holes'...
Revisado: 10-28-19
How to cook up the perfect haunted house mystery: Combine a fresh narrative, a character-driven plot populated with flawed yet relatable characters, and a spicy subplot. Place on a creeping, slow-burn while gradually adding several anxiety-inducing scenes. Add a dash of existentialist spiritualism, a little horror-appreciation club, and turn up the heat with several panicky moments where you want to stop listening but can't, and maybe end up wondering if anything untoward might be lurking in your wardrobe.
Finally, introduce a narrator skilled enough to render himself invisible (along with a genuine enthusiasm for the content), for the perfect Halloween treat. I hope to hear more from J. W. Ocker in the future, with any luck, narrated by Matt Godfrey. They're a match made in heaven. And, of course, by heaven, I mean hell.

Fatal issue with male narrator.
Revisado: 10-14-19
Xe's performance is fantastic but the male counterpart is one of the worst narrators I've ever had the displeasure of listening to. Zero inflection, seemingly zero comprehension of syntax and apparantly unaware of how to convey emotions.
What a waste of an otherwise promising book -- even despite the distracting plethora of smilies and metaphors. Cannot comment on the rest of the story as I'm regretfully returning.

No discussion of great modern authors is complete without mention of Cormac McCarthy, whose rare and blazing talent makes his every work a true literary event. A grand addition to the American literary canon, Suttree introduces readers to Cornelius Suttree, a man who abandons his affluent family to live among a dissolute array of vagabonds along the Tennessee river.

Historia
Paolo Bacigalupi's debut collection demonstrates the power and reach of the science-fiction short story. Social criticism, political parable, and environmental advocacy lie at the center of Paolo's work. Each of the stories herein is at once a warning and a celebration of the tragic comedy of the human experience.

I never wanted the stories to end.
Revisado: 09-12-11
I could listen to Paolo Bacigalupi for the rest of my life. I could just lock myself in my house and lay there, listening, (preferably with J. Davis narrating) in a futuristic stupor, happily ever after.
I never wanted to leave the world of 'The Windup Girl' and gratefully returned through the stories of 'Pump Six'. Now, I wander aimlessly though other offerings from other authors...some of whom have been on my "to read" list forever, thinking, "I wish you were Paolo Bacigalupi".
This book is a rare gift.

Evil meets Days Of Our Medieval Lives.
Revisado: 08-29-11
Unique concept and nicely executed. I enjoyed the world building immensely, although I have to admit to taking a break a few times due to the fact that the characters interactions are immature, and quite often sound like they stepped straight out of a medieval soap opera. Frustration and longing for more realistic human discourse aside, it's a very entertaining ride and a great yarn.

Revisado: 07-23-11
You can't go wrong with this collection. There is a story for every mood or occasion. The stories are often funny, wonderfully horrific, and sometimes beautiful. I was very impressed with Mr Thomley as a narrator, with his a soothing and sophisticated voice, he could not be more perfect for Poe. Worth so much more than what I paid.
