Historia
The year is 878, and the Saxons of Wessex, under King Alfred, have defeated the Danes to keep their kingdom free. Uhtred, the dispossessed son of a Northumbrian lord, helped Alfred win that victory, but now he is disgusted by Alfred's lack of generosity. Uhtred flees Wessex, going north to search for his stepsister in the formidable stronghold of Dunholm.

Giant let down- narrator changed
Revisado: 05-01-25
I really liked the story so far. But this book felt extremely tedious and slow, compared to the first 2 books. Long conversations that didn’t move the story forward. It felt like this could have been a short novella, given what actually took place.
The change in narrator was really disappointing. Not only were the returning characters voices and cadence different, but most characters came across as whining, in my opinion. Father Bianca and Ragnar sounded like the same, impotent complainer.

Historia
At the end of The Last Kingdom, The Danes had been defeated at Cynuit, but the triumph of the English is not fated to last long. The Danish Vikings quickly invade and occupy three of England's four kingdoms - and all that remains of the once proud country is a small piece of marshland, where Alfred and his family live with a few soldiers and retainers, including Uhtred, the dispossessed English nobleman who was raised by Danes.

The story is seen through the eyes of Uhtred, a dispossessed nobleman, who is captured as a child by the Danes and then raised by them so that, by the time the Northmen begin their assault on Wessex, Alfred's kingdom and the last territory in English hands, Uhtred almost thinks of himself as a Dane.

Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian - leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies. Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

Loved this book and the rest in the series
Revisado: 01-10-19
Characters were very fun and very well developed. Most had layers to them, not all good or bad. Just people dealing with life.
I thought the story was extremely entertaining and I thought the humor was well placed as well. The action was great and the various story lines were all interwoven and came together very well. Very interesting story.

Fun book, solid 3.5
Revisado: 01-10-19
Pretty basic western, which I enjoy. Different plot twist that was fun. Nothing earth shattering, but I listened steadily all the way through. If I could give half stars, I would give it a 3.5.

I couldn't make myself finish
Revisado: 01-10-19
Maybe I pulled the plug too early on this book as a result of feeling burned by another recent disappointment (Man in the High Castle). It felt like this book had a good premise, but was going nowhere. So instead of gutting it out and hoping for the best, I walked.
With maybe one exception, the characters were extremely boring and I couldn't care less about what they were occupying themselves with.
The narration was tough on this one too, though maybe I felt that because I just didn't like the story.
I need to do better research before purchasing books. It seems like a lot of people write negative reviews and still give a book 3 stars. I think the overall rating is misleading once you read the individual reviews.

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war - and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.

What???
Revisado: 12-19-18
I love the premise, but the book had almost nothing to do with it. People lived in a world where the US lost WWII, but the actual story was just non existent. It felt more like a collection of horribly long and abstract poems than a story.
It would be like....if Dorothy went to Oz, and they did a quick explanation about the yellow brick road, the wicked witch, etc. But then really deeply explored the relationships and angst of the tin man and some random dudes from the lollipop guild. Maybe a 3 page inner monologue from a flying monkey. You would yell, what about Oz! Use the landscape you created!
If the last sentence contained, “but that’s what happens when the whole population is on acid”, it would have made more sense.....though it would have still been terrible.
The performance may be better than a star, but it’s hard to tell with a story this bad.

Historia
Drums along the Mohawk, Walter D. Edmonds' masterpiece, is not only the best historical novel about upstate New York since James Fenimore Cooper, it was also number one on the bestseller list for two years, only yielding to the epic Gone with the Wind. This is the story of the forgotten pioneers of the Mohawk Valley during the Revolutionary War. Here Gilbert Martin and his young wife struggled and lived and hoped.

Historia
Dirk Struan rose from humble beginnings to build Struan & Company, also known as the Noble House, into the world’s largest Far East trading company. He is now the Tai-Pan—Supreme Leader—of all Tai-Pans in China. Along the way, however, he made a powerful enemy. Tyler Brock, Struan’s rival from their early opium-smuggling days, also heads a large trading fleet, second in size only to Struan’s. But it is not only silks and spices that drive their mutual companies’ wealth—the opium trade is still booming.

What did you love best about Tai-Pan?
I loved the varied story lines and how they built on the history of Hong Kong and Asia as a whole. If all of the interactions between countries, their people and religions weren't accurate, they were certainly believable. All of the story lines seemed to collide at the end to form a well thought out and cohesive story.
