Great story, not so great narration
Revisado: 12-27-24
I ended up reading this book after getting hooked on it by listening to the early chapters. Something in the narrator's pronounciation was off, almost like a slurring of certain words. I completely recommend the book, and will read more by this author.

Historia
When level-headed Francie arrives in Roswell, New Mexico, for her college roommate’s UFO-themed wedding—complete with a true-believer bridegroom—she can’t help but roll her eyes at all the wide-eyed talk of aliens, which obviously don’t exist. Imagine her surprise, then, when she is abducted by one. Odder still, her abductor is far from what the popular media have led her to expect, with a body like a tumbleweed and a mass of lightning-fast tentacles. Nor is Francie the only victim of the alien’s abduction spree.

Who abducted Connie Willis
Revisado: 07-26-23
This is not the Connie Willis I used to love to read. It's simple and silly. The narrator was awful, the whole experience was like a very bad cartoon. I loved all her other books, loved her characters, settings, language, plots, all of them. This is just so disappointing. At first I thought it was the narrator, but now that I have finished it, I realize it was all just one very long cliche.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

This should become a classic
Revisado: 09-05-22
This book was wonderful, from beginning to end. The characters are exceptional, their brilliance, their humility, their ability to feel and express their feelings. I fell in love with the people and the world of this novel. It was hard to leave it when I finished.
The pronunciation of some of the words in Sadie's world seemed a little off, so that's why I gave only 4 stars for performance.
The way the author describes the creative process was so detailed, it made me think of the art that exists in the world that is not seen as art at all.
The experience of listening to this book reminded me of how I felt listening to The Gentleman of Moscow, and also The Goldfinch. You want to be a character In this universe and feel the love that abounds there between friends.

A good plot line wasted.
Revisado: 08-28-22
I believe a good book should have a strong vocabulary, but in Verity, the action is described in such a repetitive manner, it's just plain boring. When Verity goes to bed, she always crawls into bed. Once she crept. When Jeremy is in bed with women, he always turns them this way and that, it's never any other method of movement, just a matter of Jeremy turning the woman. Give me a break.
There were opportunities to make a lot more intrigue In the story, but none were captured, and the omissions were not explained. I waited to find out how it was that Jeremy read Lowen's book, because he wasn't much of a reader, but whatever. I hoped to learn that Lowen had a creepy reason for sleepwalking, but nope, no reason. I wondered if Jeremy could have been the one that pushed the guy off the curb to set the whole thing in motion, but alas, no such luck. It seems those scenarios would have been too much effort.
Overall, it’s as if the author had a deadline to meet.

Historia
Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.

Revisado: 04-10-22
Nothing good, obvious ending, main character complaining and screwing up ALL THE TIME.
If you love misery, this is for you. It's like going on a long road trip with a compulsive whiner.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

A new world
Revisado: 07-06-13
The narrator brings these fantastic characters to real life. From the very beginning, you know it is a fantasy, but the situations and the settings become so harshly real, you lose yourself in this world. The story is wide ranging, continents and timespans, and somehow it all ties up so neatly. This is a very beautiful story, and I was tremendously impressed by the author's imagination, as well as descriptions and character portrayals. I will be eager to find out what the author writes next.

Revisado: 05-29-13
What disappointed you about In the Face of Jinn?
Nothing made sense, the writing was poor, and the story was drawn out in some situations and not in others. It seemed to be told as if it were realistic, and in the end, switched to romantic .
What three words best describe Bryce Howard’s performance?
Good in action scenes, but not varying with each character
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Annoyance
Any additional comments?
Dont buy this book, these are many good novels set in India, or spy novels set in war zones.
