Historia
Jim Thompson's classic The Grifters is one of the best novels ever written about the art of the con, an ingeniously crafted story of deception and betrayal that was the basis for the critically acclaimed film by Stephen Frears and Martin Scorcese. To his friends, to his coworkers, and even to his mistress Moira, Roy Dillon is an honest hardworking salesman. He lives in a cheap hotel just within his pay bracket. He goes to work every day. He has hundreds of friends and associates who could attest to his good character.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Beware--Plot based on a blatantly illegal action
Revisado: 01-16-18
Weir returns with his brilliant engineering descriptions. The narration is excellent.
However, I had two serious issues with this book. First, the heroine immediately performs an illegal act. There is no persuasive motivation, such as to right an immoral wrong.
Also, and this is personal, I have a hard time with male authors writing first person female characters. As a man, I can't imagine how male writers can authentically describe female motivations. Always seems weird to me.
The excellent engineering and narration cannot make up for the deficiencies in the plot.

Nothing ever changes in Sanders. The town's still got a video store, for God's sake. So why doesn't Eli Teague want to leave? Not that he'd ever admit it, but maybe he's been waiting - waiting for the traveler to come back. The one who's roared into his life twice before, pausing just long enough to drop tantalizing clues before disappearing in a cloud of gunfire and a squeal of tires. The one who's a walking anachronism, with her tricorne hat, flintlock rifle, and steampunked Model A Ford.

Great performance, interesting characters, dumb story set up.
Revisado: 11-13-17
It is almost illogical to criticize fictional technology in SF, but I found the underlying idea unconvincing, actually dumb.
I listened because of the performance and characters.
Also, warning: some gruesome scenes. Characters who do terrible things get rehabilitated without any justification or penance.

Not much of an ending
Revisado: 04-03-17
The set up for the great battle was ok, but when it came, nothing much happened. The book set up the characters but they did not get to interact before, during or after in the battle. There was no great conflict, either in the battle or between the characters. No tension at the end at all.

Michael is a gamer. And like most gamers, he almost spends more time on the VirtNet than in the actual world. The VirtNet offers total mind and body immersion, and it's addictive. Thanks to technology, anyone with enough money can experience fantasy worlds, risk their life without the chance of death, or just hang around with Virt-friends. And the more hacking skills you have, the more fun. Why bother following the rules when most of them are dumb, anyway?

Overwritten, lame plot, predictable
Revisado: 09-26-16
All the words are used up in the first scene; fear, sweat, pain. Therefore, there is no tension in the rest of the book, just more fear, sweat, pain. The "game" is boring, with no interesting problems, no clues, no excitement, nor innovative solutions.
There are long periods of walking through hallways "for hours." The plot is not very original and I found the ending entirely predictable. I seriously considered abandoning the book, but finished it so as to write this review to spare others the pain.
However, given that the writing is so bad, the performance is actually quite good. Davies manages to deliver each scene with care, passion, and adds a variety of tone, despite having to read the same words over and over.
To help calibrate my review, I thought that Brown's Red Rising trilogy was the best writing and performance in a long time.

Historia
Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, Colin Thatcher seems at first like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.

Brilliant performances, moving story
Revisado: 09-11-14
The reading performances of the three major characters were outstanding. Nettleton as Eve, was perfect, with the flattened English accent of someone who has lived in the US for 20+ years. I loved the mix of Englishisms and Americanisms that we (yes, I am one) accumulate. Also, her gradual, but subtle, decline was compelling and the attraction to the cop-as-savior was moving.
I didn't want to listen to the Thatcher character, the brute, but, of course, that was the point. The motivation of the character only slowly emerges because his is a story that is revealed over time, and the author had the courage to let it evolve at the right pace.
I loved the gruff cop. I admit it took a while to get through the hoarseness, but, gradually, the character and reader won me over.
The story only gets 4 stars because there are two conclusions (I hesitate to say "endings"). The first is the inevitable outcome that the author leads you towards through both the structure and the content of the story. Presumably, this was all intended to set up the epilog, which I won't give away here. While cleverly done, I thought it was not particularly well motivated within the story.
This is a book about the gradual change in people under the stress of a terrible situation. (This is not an adventure story!) Motives emerge and characters change subtly revealing their true nature. In some way, each character becomes the opposite of what you thought they were.

Avasarala: One of the best SF characters, ever!
Revisado: 01-17-14
Avasarala is a marvelous character. Evey time she shows up, interest level soars.
Mays's characterization of Avasarala is one of the best performances available at Audible. (I've listened to many, and not just SF.) Understated, but powerful.

Decent -- not as good as Linclon Lawyer
Revisado: 10-29-12
Personally, I am not a fan of the modern trend towards stories about really sick crimes. Decent characters and ok plot. Well read, good characterizations.
