Historia
Young Nadia Owusu followed her father, a United Nations official, from Europe to Africa and back again. Just as she and her family settled into a new home, her father would tell them it was time to say their goodbyes. The instability wrought by Nadia’s nomadic childhood was deepened by family secrets and fractures, both lived and inherited. Her Armenian American mother, who abandoned Nadia when she was two, would periodically reappear, only to vanish again. Her father, a Ghanaian, the great hero of her life, died when she was 13.

Wanted to like this but I’m giving up
Revisado: 06-26-24
My sister-in-law saw Nadia speak and she highly recommended that I read this book. I had high hopes and I’m giving up after a couple chapters. Maybe it gets better but I’m trying to stay in a positive headspace and this book was bringing me down. Maybe I’m having a hard time because it’s true.

Historia
If my childhood taught me anything, it was to survive. Now I have a deep-rooted mistrust of people and a wall of steel and ice surrounding my heart. So, when Reed Ryan steps into my life, I know I need to keep him far away. He’s everything I grew up hating. Fighting. Fleeing. Devastatingly handsome, he looks like a drunken regret and has heartbreak written over every inch of his body - literally. He’s the quintessential bad boy...and he’s a cop. But the man is my undoing.

I wasn’t crazy about this book but I couldn’t stop listening
Revisado: 06-11-24
There were so many unbelievable things about this book but the main characters drew me in anyways. About a quarter of the way through I was ready to give up but stuck with it.

Everyone that is, except for Zero, whose pod has malfunctioned, waking him up a hundred years early. His initial excitement in roaming the ship alone quickly turns to a heart-stopping interstellar adventure when a family of space pirates show up, trying to hijack the ship and take the colonizers hostage.

I gave up after chapter 15. Not worth a listen unless you have to. The bad guys reminded me to the momma in goonies and the rest of her bunch.

Nainoa’s family, struggling amidst the collapse of the sugarcane industry, hails his rescue as a sign of favor from ancient Hawaiian gods - a belief that appears validated after he exhibits puzzling new abilities.

5+ stars!
Revisado: 02-24-24
The struggles of a native Hawaiian family with lots of Hawaiian lore woven in. This was one of my favorite books I’ve “read” so far. I loved the narrators and the story was fascinating. I have known people that left the Big Island for the mainland because it was hard to make it as Hawaii in general became more and more expensive to survive.

Historia
No job, no money, no love - and to make things worse, 27-year-old Charlie has no choice but to leave New York City and move in with his mom in his isolated and conservative hometown of Sunset Springs. Home isn’t a comfortable place for Charlie. One of very few Black residents and the only trans person around town that he knows of, this will be Charlie’s first time back in Sunset Springs since he transitioned. He expects confusion and maybe even hostility. He definitely does not expect Jackson Ford.

A no-so-long-ago history lesson for women
Revisado: 02-17-24
A history of women’s health issues. I was surprised to learn about this and lived the historical background. The reader was very “clinical” and in some ways I appreciated that, but I also would set a timer and fall asleep to this book

I liked this book better than the first. I feel like the characters are a little more grown and enjoyed the narration as well. This narrator was just as good as the previous.

I usually listen to cheesy romance novels to pass time driving or on the train thinking the are all the same. This was different enough to really catch my attention. The characters were well written and funny, and the narrator was fantastic!

Not a fan of the insecure man’s self-absorbed main character
Revisado: 10-23-22
I was not a fan of the main male character. He was so whiney and insecure. I don’t know how I managed to get through the first half, but he did turn it around in the end.
