Historia
Between life and death, dreaming and waking, at the train stop beyond the end of the world is the city of Palimpsest. To get there is a miracle, a mystery, a gift, and a curse - a voyage permitted only to those who’ve always believed there’s another world than the one that meets the eye. Those fated to make the passage are marked forever by a map of that wondrous city tattooed on their flesh after a single orgasmic night. To this kingdom of ghost trains, lion-priests, living kanji, and cream-filled canals come four travelers.

Strange and Creative. Sometimes Hard to Follow
Revisado: 04-06-25
This is such an interesting idea. Never read anything like it. That said, it's so abstract, and Valente's prose so unusual at times, that I found it hard to follow and connect to the overall story. What sticks with me are individual scenes and moments between characters. Aside from the struggle for meaning, and belonging, it's tough for me to pin down the themes. Honestly, this would be a great one to read in a literature class, or book club. That way you could get more perspectives an insights.

Darkly Beautiful and Unsettling
Revisado: 04-06-25
It's a story of eldritch horror. It's a story of body horror. It's a story of losing one's humanity. It's a story about the lure of the deadly and unknown. But it's also a love story. A quick read. I would have happily spent more time in this world with these characters.

I read this one when it first came out, and honestly thought I'd already reviewed it. It was really good. I had no prior experience with DBT, save for the podcast by the authors, but it made a lot of things clear to me that really resonated. It offers real and realistic perspectives and tips. Strongly recommend it, as well as their podcasts: "DBT & Me" and "The Couch & the Chair"

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

Heart wrenching story

An amazing tale of a grieving family, scientific discovery, and moral quandaries. No easy answers and many hard moments, but moving and deeply human.

Historia
In Still Just a Geek, Wil revisits his 2004 collection of blog posts, Just a Geek, filled with insightful and often laugh-out-loud annotated comments, additional later writings, and all new material written for this publication. The result is an incredibly raw and honest memoir, in which Wil opens up about his life, about falling in love, about coming to grips with his past work, choices, and family, and finding fulfillment in the new phases of his career.

Heartfelt
Revisado: 05-21-24
While I think Mr. Wheaton is too hard on his past self in this revised memoir, it certainly makes me think about my own opinions and behavior in my youth. Mostly fun and funny with some brief dives into darkness. The nested footnotes are fun, but occasionally a little much. But overall a heartfelt journey to maturity that made me laugh and get misty eyed in turn, with moments of self reflection. Very solid.

Decent
Revisado: 03-09-24
Hardly great literature but a fun time. Chock full of D&D tropes and references that’ll probably be fun for listeners who played the game back in the day. But those same bits may come across as weird or off-putting to readers without that background. Cinders is the best character.

Good narration. Excellent pacing and mood. Evocative descriptions of some creepy things. The main character is kind of a jerk, which may not be to everyone’s taste, but he’s self aware and grows over time.

It’s okay
Revisado: 10-24-23
There’s a cool idea for a story here. Overall my impression is positive, though it drags in a few places, story-wise, and the reader’s affect is pretty flat throughout, which doesn’t help. There’s some decent character growth, though I never really felt much connection to those characters. Overall decent
