Historia
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Excellent twist at the end!
Revisado: 05-16-24
I’ve not encountered any Don Winslow titles before, but something about his writing voice reminds me of my favorite pulp writer-slash-genius, Dashiell Hammett.
This is the first time I’ve experienced his writing; so far, I’m mightily impressed.
Harris’ narration (gotta love Ed Harris…) is absolutely apt for the material.
As it’s (currently) a free listen for Audible Plus members, I highly recommend that you give it a whirl.
Don’t cost nothin’! 🤷🏼♀️

Excellent book - ended up listening to it all in one day.

Really enjoyed this one!
I especially love that the characters are well-conceived and easily discerned from one another - lately it seems that most newer books that I read / listen to end up having a bunch of generic or stereotyped characters that are simply names and actions, but no personalities. That’s NOT the case here. Revelations about the characters’ personalities and histories are doled out gradually, and reveal themselves in an organic way throughout the book instead of having everybody’s life story, kinks, weaknesses, financial status, and mother’s maiden name being plopped down in front of the reader right up front in one big tropey lump.
Meadows’ (the protagonist police detective) identity as an “outsider” won’t be a surprise to fans of the genre… “outsider detective” basically IS the genre… but his particular vein of “outsider-ness” isn’t derivative or generic.
The reader has a pleasant tone and rate of reading, and his voices give additional depth to the personalities of the characters.
The story itself is nicely twisty, and the author does a great job of keeping things moving and changing, so that you don’t get complacent.
All in all, one of the best recent books I’ve found in the genre. I’ll definitely be getting more books by Price (as in, I’ll download the next in the detective Meadows series as soon as I submit this review!)

Historia
On the second to last day of shooting Godless, I tell the story of falling off my horse, breaking my wrist, and coming out of a morphine cloud to rise up and shoot the final day. I segue into a musical I wrote about a singing cowboy who comes upon a bad guy left to die in the desert. From that show, I perform the song “In the Meantime.” And Dumb and Dumber’s Harry Dunne is back with Part 3 of “Snack Time With Harry Dunne,” still torturing the actor who played him in the movie.

Listens like an audiobook memoir, only a lot more interesting than most, and (bonus!) including some pretty solid music wrapped around clever and well-crafted lyrics.
He really could have monetized this if he’d wanted to… but his loss is our gain Very engaging - give it a listen! -kc.

Historia
Emmy Award winner Matthew Rhys stars in this fascinating and award-winning one-man show about international star of stage and screen Richard Burton. Written by Mark Jenkins, Playing Burton offers a penetrating look at the notorious actor’s life, from growing up in an impoverished mining community in South Wales to becoming one of the greatest performers of his generation.

Very Enjoyable
Revisado: 02-08-21
Liked it a lot - jives quite well with the impression of Burton’s life that I got from reading his published diaries.
Rhys’ natural South Walian accent serves the piece well - his timbre sounds a little higher and he does speak a bit more quickly than how I “hear” Burton’s voice in my head. Luckily, I discovered that choosing to have it play back at 0.9 or 0.8 speed deepens the tone, slows things down to a speed that better suits my own notions of Burton’s meter, and as a bonus, doing so also conveniently imparted the impression of the slightly inebriated slur that so many full-time drinkers develop.

Historia
In 88 BC, it seems as if the entire ancient world is at war. In the west, the Italian states are rebelling against Rome; in the east, Mithridates is marching through and conquering the Roman Asian provinces. Even in the relatively calm Alexandria, a coup has brought a new pharaoh to power and chaos to the streets. The young Gordianus is waiting out the chaos in Alexandria with Bethesda when he gets a cryptic message from his former tutor and friend, Antipater.

Whoa...nope.
Revisado: 05-28-20
I love most of Saylor’s Gordianus book series, and story-wise what I did listen to seemed about on par with the others, but this reader was ill-cast and is not suited to this book, the subject, or the characters. His reading and the way he pronounces the names is cringeworthy for me - I’ve heard seventh grade book reports with more inflection.
Perhaps find somebody who at least sounds familiar with Latin, or even just modern Italian... or, heck - any non-American accent? It is a novel about ancient Rome, after all.
Tried to start a couple times, because I was really in the mood for a Saylor book and was hoping I hadn’t wasted my money, but couldn’t stomach it.
