Historia
In the most famous scandal of sports history, eight Chicago White Sox players - including Shoeless Joe Jackson - agreed to throw the 1919 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for the promise of $20,000 each from gamblers reportedly working for New York mobster Arnold Rothstein. Heavily favored, Chicago lost the Series five games to three. Although rumors of a fix flew while the series was being played, they were largely disregarded by players and the public at large.

Best book on black sox
Revisado: 08-09-21
I have read much about the Black Sox but never have I seen such a thorough and sophisticated analysis and description as this. Reader was great though he mispronounced Veeck.

Historia
Viktor Orlov had a longstanding appointment with death. Once Russia’s richest man, he now resides in splendid exile in London, where he has waged a tireless crusade against the authoritarian kleptocrats who have seized control of the Kremlin. His mansion in Chelsea’s exclusive Cheyne Walk is one of the most heavily protected private dwellings in London. Yet somehow, on a rainy summer evening, in the midst of a global pandemic, Russia’s vengeful president finally manages to cross Orlov’s name off his kill list.

If you like Gabriel Allon you will love this book.
Revisado: 07-20-21
The book is great, but the post-book note is even more powerful. Many of the most interesting characters from past books reappear. Narration is fantastic. But the post book note, which came out of the blue, was the best description of what has gone on in this country that I have ever seen.

Historia
A Magic Summer tells of that remarkable season by chronicling the major events as viewed twenty years later. Interviews conducted twenty years after with members of the team - Seaver, Ryan, McGraw, and others - provide immediacy and, with that, fascinating updates and insights. This is a unique record and celebration of a season that Mets fans - and all baseball fans - will not soon forget.

Fantastic story; terrible narrator
Revisado: 06-24-21
For any Met fan who goes back to 1969 (or who doesn't) this book is a must. Too bad the narrator had a monotone and didn't bother to find out how to pronounce any names!

Historia
When Pope Paul VII dies suddenly, Gabriel Allon is summoned to Rome by the Holy Father’s loyal private secretary, Archbishop Luigi Donati. A billion Catholic faithful have been told that the pope died of a heart attack. Donati, however, has two good reasons to suspect his master was murdered. The Swiss Guard who was standing watch outside the papal apartments the night of the pope’s death is missing. So, too, is the letter the Holy Father was writing during the final hours of his life. A letter that was addressed to Gabriel.

Fascinating on some levels but....
Revisado: 04-29-21
I am a sucker for Daniel Silva books and this was a fascinating study in the origins of anti-semitism. However the story had too many characters and I cannot stand the way people are clubbed over the head and come within an inch of getting blown away and the next day it is like nothing traumatic happened and life is perfect. Performance, as always, is perfection.

It was like I was there.
Revisado: 04-17-21
Fascinating. Though I knew much about the period, I learned much I didn't know. But it was the gripping description of election night 1948 that made me feel like I was actually there. I screamed to my wife, "Truman pulled it out!" Narration was excellent.

The first civil war book I have read that so vividly brings to life the political lead-up to the war. It was tough to stop listening.
