Historia
Joe King Oliver’s beloved Grandma B has found a tumor, and at her age, treatment is high-risk. She’s lived life fully and without regrets, and now has only a single, dying wish: to see her long-lost son. King has been estranged from his father, Chief Odin Oliver, since he was a young boy. He swore to never speak to the man again when he was taken away in handcuffs. But now, Grandma B’s pure ask has opened King’s heart, and through his hunt, he gains a deeper understanding of his father as a complicated, righteous man—a man defined by women, a man protected by women, a man he wants to know.

Strong Start, Weak Finish
Revisado: 03-25-25
The 3rd book in the King Oliver series, I enjoyed the dualing mysteries, the characters they introduced. But the resolutions for both were weak, and the twists introduced in the 3rd act were equally weak and wacky. Still, Walter Mosely is one of my favorite, so I'll still read the next installment.

Historia
January 1970 finds Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins, LA’s premier Black detective, at 50 years of age despite all expectations. He has a loving family, a beautiful home, and a thriving investigation agency. All is right with the world… and then Amethystine Stoller, his own personal Helen of Troy, arrives. Her ex-husband is missing. A simple enough case. But even as Easy takes his first step in the investigation he trips. He falls into the memory of things past. Little things, like loss, love, a world war, and a hunger that has eaten at him since he was a Black boy on his own.

Not the Best, Not the Worst...
Revisado: 06-07-24
It's definitely not the best in the series, but it's serviceable. There were weird continuity issues I came across, sorta lazy wrapups for characters introduced, and a new love interest that borrows heavily from Bonnie's introduction in "Little Yellow Dog". I love these books, but maybe it's time to start heading towards the finale.

Historia
The seductive and relentless figure of Raymond Chandler’s detective, Philip Marlowe, is vividly re-imagined in present-day Los Angeles. Here is a city of scheming Malibu actresses, ruthless gang members, virulent inequality, and washed-out police.

Damn this sucked...
Revisado: 01-26-24
As a fan of the IQ novels l, at least until "Hi-Five", I was hoping for a new and interesting take on the character of Phillip Marlowe. But instead I got a convoluted, messy, moronic story that was way longer than it needed to be. Everything about this book frustrated me and solidified my opinion that Joe Ide is a hack.

Historia
In Mark Haines’s former life, he was an evangelical youth pastor, a role model, and a family man - until he abandoned his wife, his daughter, and his beliefs. Now he’s marking time between sunny days surfing and dark nights working security at an industrial complex. His isolation is broken when Cindy, a charming 22-year-old drifter he sees hitchhiking on the Pacific Coast Highway, hustles him for a breakfast and a place to crash - two cynical kindred spirits.

As far as noir stories go, this doesn't do anything new. And the tv show it was going to spawn is canceled now, so there really aren't any winners when it comes to this book.
