Historia
For decades, biology has been dominated by the study of genetic information. Information is important, but it is only part of what makes us alive. Our inheritance also includes our living metabolic network, a flame passed from generation to generation, right back to the origin of life. In Transformer, biochemist Nick Lane reveals a scientific renaissance that is hiding in plain sight-how the same simple chemistry gives rise to life and causes our demise.

Transformer
Revisado: 03-22-24
The depth of observations and how they are explained is the best I’ve ever heard. I’m on my third listen and unlike most books that take a deep dive, I am looking forward to listening to it many more times for I am a pragmatic seeker of knowledge and Nick Lane writes it with an alluring sparkle. Esoteric difficulties are posted then explained with simplicity that only a mind like his can. Imagine an anomaly in muscle tissue becoming the pumping heart of an organism or the fork in the road developed between plant and animal and a brilliant sentence or two on how a plant metabolizes the sun. The last paragraph sums up the world as we know it: a reaction to motion. Please read/listen to this book.

This is all this information I ever wanted in a chemistry book.
Revisado: 09-25-23
I study chemistry everyday and this book gives excellent reference to the topics. I then can take a deep dive on my own using other sources.
Having a directory like this is essential to someone like me who is self taught and seeks order in the categorical maze of chemistry.
I highly recommend this book to people who earnestly self teach themselves.

Historia
For thousands of years mathematicians solved progressively more difficult algebraic equations, until they encountered the quintic equation, which resisted solution for three centuries. Working independently, two prodigies ultimately proved that the quintic cannot be solved by a simple formula. The first popular account of the mathematics of symmetry and order, The Equation That Couldn't Be Solved is told not through abstract formulas but in a beautifully written and dramatic account of the lives and work of some of the greatest and most intriguing mathematicians in history.

Half way through…..no meat, just fat
Revisado: 12-31-22
I read these books for enlightenment and inspiration. So far it’s a history lesson which hasn’t touched on new applications of of old OR new concepts of symmetry. Based on what I’ve heard so far, I wonder if symmetry is an important component to the keys of the universe.

Historia
Dr. Catherine Kleier invites us to open our eyes to the phenomenal world of plant life and to the process she calls “Natura Revelata”, the joy of celebrating and learning from the secrets of nature. As Dr. Kleier shares her knowledge with contagious excitement for her subject, she emphasizes the middle ground: Instead of focusing on cell microbiology or the study of ecosystems and habitats, she stresses the basic biology, function, and the amazing adaptations of the plants we see all around us.

A wonderful person
Revisado: 07-25-22
Very seldom do we get a chance to hear knowledge presented like this. Most of the time it is read well by a reader. In this case the author is superb and her occasional quirkiness is tolerable. The energy she brings with her knowledge combines into one of the best science readings I’ve ever heard. I wish I could go for a walk in my nearby park with this person and just listen to her interpretation of life. Thank you whoever you are.

Historia
The Earth teems with life: in its oceans, forests, skies, and cities. Yet there's a black hole at the heart of biology. We do not know why complex life is the way it is, or, for that matter, how life first began. In The Vital Question, award-winning author and biochemist Nick Lane radically reframes evolutionary history, putting forward a solution to conundrums that have puzzled generations of scientists.

I wish more books were written this way.
Revisado: 08-28-21
Many people would say this book assumed the reader to be beyond 101 stuff. I’m self taught and delighted in the fact that I had to listen to this book three times and will probably listen three more times - it’s that well done - I pulls me in to a deeper understanding every time I listen. I wish more books assumed this level of understanding. I wish more books were written this way.

Historia
Nobel laureate Erwin Schrödinger's What is Life? is one of the great science classics of the 20th century. A distinguished physicist's exploration of the question which lies at the heart of biology, it was written for the layman but proved one of the spurs to the birth of molecular biology and the subsequent discovery of the structure of DNA. It appears here together with "Mind and Matter", his essay investigating a relationship which has eluded and puzzled philosophers since the earliest times.

The only thing that parallels the quality of this writing is the quality of the reader. I listen to this book over and over - the clarity of Schrödinger, his thought and syntax style is inspiring.
