Beautiful performance of an excellent book

I admired the characters, the portrayal of the City at the time and the engaging performance. Now, A Table for Two, to learn what happened to Eve when she went to Hollywood.

A parallel universe retelling of Huckleberry Finn
Revisado: 01-17-25
Well written, avoids most of the problems with Twain’s novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The Duke and King act much more realistically, the crazy intrusion of Tom Sawyer is avoided, and the silly situation of Jim being able to free himself yet willing to remain in bondage is eliminated. There are some surprises along the way. Worth all the attention it’s getting.

Historia
In Dreams of El Dorado, H. W. Brands tells the thrilling, panoramic story of the settling of the American West. He takes us from John Jacob Astor's fur trading outpost in Oregon to the Texas Revolution, from the California gold rush to the Oklahoma land rush. He shows how the migrants' dreams drove them to feats of courage and perseverance that put their stay-at-home cousins to shame - and how those same dreams also drove them to outrageous acts of violence against indigenous peoples and one another. El Dorado was at least as elusive in the West as it ever was in the East.

Historia
Dancing at the Rascal Fair by National Book Award nominee Ivan Doig captures the passion and tenacity of turn-of-the-century immigrants struggling to build new lives amidst Montana’s windswept Rockies. The tale unfolds into a contest of the heart between Anna Ramsay and Angus McCaskill—kept apart by obligations—as they and their stormy kin vie to tame the brutal land.

Interesting history, evocative situations, unsympathetic characters
Revisado: 09-03-24
I felt the author effectively presented the situations and risks and limitations of life in Montana at the end of the 19th C and beginning of the 20th, but I found that I did not like nor respect any of the characters, their choices nor the circumstances which they accepted.

Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

He shared the magic of those meals with us in The Tucci Cookbook and The Tucci Table, and now he takes us beyond the savory recipes and into the compelling stories behind them. Taste is a reflection on the intersection of food and life, filled with anecdotes about his growing up in Westchester, New York.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

A worthy addition to two excellent series
Revisado: 11-15-23
Combining the Lincoln Lawyer and Bosch series works well here. The actions of the two main characters are motivated by more noble goals, and the twists in the plot line are ample to keep the listener guessing. Having Peter Giles and Titus Welliver read their characters’ sections helps to keep the storylines relevant to the continuation of both.

Historia
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

A bit too contrived for my tastes. Gimmicky
Revisado: 10-30-23
While the author’s skill at writing is undeniable, the book seems to hinge on the unexpected surprises from its book within a book format. I could not suspend disbelief enough to accept the important confrontation with the killer, and so was disappointed.

Historia
The Open Range cattle era lasted barely a quarter-century, but it left America irrevocably changed. These few decades following the Civil War brought America its greatest boom-and-bust cycle until the Depression, the invention of the assembly line, and the dawn of the conservation movement. It inspired legends, such as that icon of rugged individualism, the cowboy. Yet this extraordinary time and its import have remained unexamined for decades. Cattle Kingdom reveals the truth of how the West rose and fell, and how its legacy defines us today.

Important history, well told, with insights into the financial basis
Revisado: 09-29-23
The author’s knowledge of financial theory is impressive, and he demonstrates a thorough understanding of the forces and effects. The section on the Johnson County War is well told and disturbing, as is right.
